Arm yourself with a long length of string and a powerful magnet, and when you go back tomorrow, if the key has indeed gone down the drain then with a bit of luck you'll be able to dangle the magnet down and snag it from the bottom of the drain - I expect there'll be a sump, or trap, below the grating.

A magnet, like one out of a speaker. I imagine you'll find one cheaper than having three locks changed.

You've dropped keys down a drain more than once, 'all the time' suggests a certain type of 'special'!!!??? Doh!

I think skiptalker meant he is the guy that gets them out for people who've dropped them.

Well the person who dropped em, would think that.... The rest of us know who he was referring too.. Laughing

Actually, this reminds me of when I took a huge carload of DIY crap down to the local dump a few years back. Having emptied the car out into the container skip (which was over a barrier, at a lower level, I realised I'd lost my car keys, and having searched all over, decided they can only have ended up in the skip. Shit.

As there wasn't too much in there, I decided it had to be at least worth a look, so with the attendant's consent I scrambled into said skip, and spent about half an hour grovelling around in the contents in a vain search for the missing keys. Of course, all the while, other punters came over to lean on the barrier and make helpful comments, which really helped. I drew quite a crowd in the end, and everyone there (except me) had a very entertaining morning.

Eventually I called it a day and clambered out. While sat back in the car cursing and trying to work out what to do next, I suddenly had a flash of inspiration - I fished around under my seat, and Bob was duly my uncle. Brick Wall

I put keys in the bin this morning while clearing up kitchen worktops.
If it makes you feel better. Laughing

It's bin day too BUT bins were put out beforehand so quite easily retrieved.

I'm guessing you didn't proudly shout "found them!" and instead just drove off sitting as low in your seat as humanly possible?

about 10 years ago whilst working at Stansted airport I had my bike key in a plastic bag with my lunch.

I ate my lunch and threw the bag in the bin.

at the end of my shift I realised my mistake, the bins had been emptied and taken down to the compactor.

I got access and found the now empty bin beside the machine. hanging out of the entrance was a familiar looking bag inches from destruction.

I bought a lotto ticket that night, I didn't win.

I got asked about recovering a smart phone that had dropped down a road gulley when the owner was a bit drunk and getting out of the cab the night before.

I got someone to find it the next morning. I'll admit I was expecting him to use gulley spades or a grab handle, but he didn't seem to mind going in up to his shoulder to get it out of the water and gloop, not even a glove!

I'm told the phone worked after drying out.
