If you had a bike that was built in 1969 however it is registered as 1980 (when it was imported possibly) Is it easy enough to change this and get an age related plate? I'm thinking, certificate from the owners club and send it to the DVLA with some kind of form.

Or is it harder work than that?

Looking around the web it would seem to hinge on the vehicle having been previously registered in the country it was imported from. If this was the case it should have been given an age related plate providing a date certificate could be produced.
I haven't been able to find and example that matches your but suspect that as it already has a UK registration it will be difficult, if not impossible to get that changed.
The sticking point seems to be the letter on plate refers to date first registered which may well have been when it was imported.

Hi

It is possible, but being the DVLA likely not easy. I know a guy who spent ages trying to work out how to do it, and he WAS the recognised person for that model of car for registration dating purposes

All the best

Yup and it's also when it was registered.

You could fuck around putting yourself through hours of painful bureaucracy in hopeless attempt to get anything helpful or useful from the DVLA or you could just tell people that it's a 1969 model which was imported in 1980.

So what if it's on a 1980 plate rather than a 1969 plate?

I'll make you a certificate from teffers you can send them which comes complete with over 500 A4 pages of teff.

Probably not worth the bother.

My GSXR is a late production K1 and was first registered in Canada in 2002. The V5 actually says it's a K2.

DVLA gave it a Y plate. A few calls to them had me banging my head off the wall and I gave up on trying to get a correct plate.

Unless the "correct" plate would add significant value I'd just forget about it.

Back then they didn't issue age-related plates on import (we moved back to the UK from Germany in 1981 - dad brought the Chrysler Alpine he'd bought over there back with us and it got a W plate despite being first registered in 1979).

Besides, if you can find an age relevant number plate which is older than the vehicle, you can use it anyway.

Hi

Suspect the biggest difference is that 1969 plate means getting free road tax sooner. And possibly more chance of getting it MOT exempt at some point.

All the best

^^^^ This. If it's purely for vanity purposes, then a private plate may be an option, but ultimately if it was given a 1980 plate, there will be no changing the registration document. I expect that this was the procedure in place at the time, which is why the 80's moniker.

As far as I can tell from the legislation, it talks about vehicle "construction" with respect to age, not "registration". Of course getting DVLA to recognise the difference is another matter.
