I've noticed on a number of threads now where people have difficulty deciding on which bike to get as their first 'big' bike.
The advice often given is don't go for something too powerful which IMHO is spot on. Power can get you out of tight spots but can also put you in whole world of hurt very quickly.
However, what I don't seem to see is people being told this first 'big' bike is unlikely to be kept for a number of years.
The power of the bike you did the DAS on may seem as much as you'll ever want but that is just because you are not really used to the bike. Use it for 6 months and that awesome power just becomes normal. This happens no matter how powerful a bike is.
I remember the bike I had just before I did the house /kids break feeling nothing special. In fact it was the quickest production bike available at the time (ZX10 B1 de-restricted).
On my return to bikes several decades later the ZX6r I bough seemed a little bit scary. One track day later it seems normal again. Thoughts of returning to a 1000cc bike are surfacing already.
So perhaps another way to look at the first bike would be...
1) If commuting then get the best one for that. Probably taking to to account service interval, MPG, luggage carrying ability, reliability etc.
2) If for fun then look at getting something that will give you experience whilst losing the least amount of money when you come to p/ex or sell it 12 months down the road.
Might make the purchase decision easier
