So I bought a bike in bits, genuine from an owner (he'd had it a while), stripped to rebuild and then had medical problems. Still had MOT when I got it, really old bike early 80's.

I only have the frame left, it has no VIN though, I suspect it was tagged but as they'd done some work on the frame and painted it, something has happened to it. In order to scrap usually you take the bike (or what's left) to the scrapyard with V5. V5 is present and in my name. But it must be identifiable.

What is the easiest way to dispose of, it's currently SORN'd?

I've yet to find anything that requires you to do this only that you are required to notify DVLA. DVLA will ask you lots of questions to which you reply 'I have notified you and that is all I am required to do. Thank you for your letter, this confirms that you have been notified'.
Assuming nothing has changed this should wind them up nicely and theres not a single thing they can do.

Cut into small pieces, put pieces in the bin!
As it's, currently, Sorn'ed it will remain Sorn'ed forever, (as long as you do nothing about it), end of problem!

Why would you not sell it? Stick it on eBay at 99p with no reserve and someone will buy it.

Can't be arsed with the snarky buyers, oh it doesn't have a number etc. etc. I even have the number plate for it, the original metal one.

i have done two frames without issue. Cut into bits and take bits to the tip.

Then send off the v5 after filling in the scrap vehicle bit and put a note in saying frame is no longer a frame.

Because winding up the DVLA is more fun than being wound up by eBayers?

That said, the potential buyers for that age of bike probably aren't the usual "wil swop hard staffie 4 it" mob.

As far as I can determine, here's the entirety of what the law requires:

The Road Vehicles (Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2002 S17 wrote:

Notification of destruction or permanent export of a vehicle

17. Where a vehicle is destroyed or sent permanently out of—

(a) Great Britain; or

(b) Northern Ireland,

the registered keeper shall immediately notify the Secretary of State of the fact and, at the same time, surrender the registration document to him.

HAHA notify the Secretary of State, that's worth the entertainment value.

I send the V5c back to DVLA with a letter stating that I've cut the frame up and the bike no longer exists. I've done this more than once and they've always sent me the letter confirming that I am no longer the registered keeper. I have a file full of these - it's always worth keeping them, simply because the DVLA are such bellends.

The only difference seems to be that when something has a certificate of destruction issued by a breaker it disappears from the DVLA computer. Doing it as above you can still look them up on the MOT checker etc. - but as it's not your problem anymore, who cares?

I (think) newer logbooks do not have the option to allow you to declare "self scrapped" (or however they want to phrase it now) to prevent issues I guess. I do not have any vehicles at the moment so I'm unable to confirm this.

The theory I suppose is so that only authorised merchants can declare "destroyed"

I did dispose of a very very rotten KC100 frame about 10 maybe 12 years ago, I simply chopped it up into lots of small bits and took said bits to the tip.

The logbook then allowed "self scrapped" so I ticked that.

Interestingly as mentioned above, if you do a "self scrap" (if you still can that is!) then it is still listed on the 'Check your road tax' site, but if its been destroyed by an authorised scrapyard (and they have marked it destroyed, many seem to not I think) then it does not appear anymore...

Sorn is perpetual now. If the frame has no identifying marks just lob it.

Just out of interest, has anyone got a new(ish) V5 to hand to check if there is still an option / checkbox to tick to mark "scrapped" ?

By "new" I mean one issued in say the last year or so.

I would suspect its not there anymore, the older ones will have it and I would guess you could send it off with it checked and they would probably accept that.

A mate of mine buried a Z750 twin on Talacre beach many, many years ago. He bought it very cheap (£40 I think) and it only just made it there, it was never going to get him home so he dug a big hole while we collected wood for a fire and lobbed the old Z in it.

On my two year old V5, the options within section 9 are:-

You sold or transferred the vehicle to a:-

Motor trader
Dismantler
Vehicle insurer

All the above must sign the document and you should post it to the DVLA!

There is no, official, option available to 'self scrap', (no doubt this ticks a 'green' box somewhere)!
The document doesn't forbid you 'self scrapping' the vehicle, it simply doesn't mention it and there's nothing on the document that gives you the opportunity to indicate that you have 'self scrapped'!

As I said previously, cut into bits, put bits in the bin and SORN it!
I've done it before, there have been no comebacks!
