PostPosted: 10:31 - 20 Feb 2017    Post subject: Roads, Camping and sites near Calais Reply with quote

I'm going to France for approx 5 days around the end of March or early April on the bike and was wandering if anyone knows any nice routes, camp sites, b&bs and views without getting further away than about 400 miles from Calais.

I plan on going no more than 200 miles deep each day for 2 consecutive days then making a different journey back to Calais for the ferry home.

Thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up

I hear there is a massive camp site with plenty of space just outside Calais called the Jungle Thumbs Up

Looks like a BCF BBQ has just finished..

Anyway, OP, why the limit of 200 miles from Calais? Thinking

Odd.

I don't want to be riding all day, I'd rather do a few hours then setup camp and go explore the area.

Also I'd probably be doing it on a CB250RS so can't do super speeds... realistically can't do much more than 65/70mph

Don't bother camping. F1 hotels are so cheap it's just not worth dragging all the gear along with you. As long as you are OK with shared showers and toilets down the hall they are fine.

Fair enough, I was considering this and at about £26 a night it's cheaper than a good tent

Laughing It's either that or my Ducati 900SS which has currently averaged a new clutch every 300 miles and I'd rather rely on a bike that doesn't even need a battery to start and run!

You have formula 1's and Premier class which are not much more expensive. A few euros more for your own bathroom. Thumbs Up

As long as you don't mind being a bit out of town on an industrial estate they are great.

Do they both always have room so I can just turn up at 7pm or something and get a bed?

I don't want to book anywhere, I'd rather just ride till I want to stop and find the nearest either F1 or Premier Class.

Would be going to Dunkirk but this seems do-able in one day, an hour to dover, 2 hour ferry and another few hours into france avoiding motorways and tolls.

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/London/hotelF1+Dieppe,+2+Impasse+des+Rouges+Gorges,+76200+Dieppe,+France/@50.6992957,-0.2770283,8z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m17!4m16!1m5!1m1!1s0x47d8a00baf21de75:0x52963a5addd52a99!2m2!1d-0.1277583!2d51.5073509!1m5!1m1!1s0x47e0a277dee3157b:0xa079745654c7e5b3!2m2!1d1.0754714!2d49.9022328!2m2!1b1!2b1!3e0

Then this the next day but exploring the area etc.

Dunkirk is about the last place I'd head for, it's a bit like Redcar. Rolling Eyes

When you're done and back, a write up with pics or we'll come round your house!

Calais is about £15 more, would you say it's worth it?

Feel free to come round anyway Laughing , but there will definitely be pics and probably some video so I'll happily write it up Thumbs Up

Yes, more than likely. Most of the French people you see turning up at budget hotels in the evening have not booked. Even if one is full they are often built with another one next door.

When we do weekends away or go touring we always pre book. The rate is often quite a bit cheaper that way, specially with the budget hotels. The walk in rate can sometimes be twice as much so it's worth planning where you want to go and sticking to it.

Dunkirk is 20 minutes up the road from Calais. Either ferry port - makes no real difference as far as I can tell (I've used both and neither are remotely memorable).
I can only guess that doggone thought you were going to spend your time exploring Dunkirk.

Yes, Matt is right. Booking in advance is usually a bit cheaper but I've done both and can't remember ever having a problem except for Lourdes, where it was full of bible bashers and Lille, where the Permiere class is right in the centre of the town. Thumbs Up

Oh yes, you NEED a credit card to book and get into the hotels, they are pretty much fully automated.

Thanks for all the advice guys Thumbs Up

I've paid for the ferry and booked my first night in Dieppe.

This will be my journey once I'm off the ferry.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Calais,+France/hotelF1+Dieppe,+2+Impasse+des+Rouges+Gorges,+76200+Dieppe,+France/@50.6007454,1.0870909,8.19z/data=!4m27!4m26!1m15!1m1!1s0x47dc3f75d7f1e363:0xacbed9e08cd279f4!2m2!1d1.858686!2d50.95129!3m4!1m2!1d1.5934253!2d50.8244064!3s0x47dc2f501d6c36d7:0x593c51e6147089f!3m4!1m2!1d1.6149906!2d50.4512851!3s0x47dddb05efda9387:0x7b3113ec27013fd!1m5!1m1!1s0x47e0a277dee3157b:0xa079745654c7e5b3!2m2!1d1.0754714!2d49.9022328!2m2!1b1!2b1!3e0

I want to see Audresselles for a bit so might get some lunch there then carry on down. Is there anything else on that route that is worth stopping for a bit to see?

Next question is since I'll be in France for 4 nights, what should I do from Dieppe?

The next day I want to take the short trip to Honfluer and stay one night there, is it nice?

And what would be the nicest return route back to Calais?

It's all great until you wake up in the night feeling sick. Very quickly you have to decide whether to try and make it to the toilet down the hall or if you should just go to the window even though the hotel room is on the second or third floor up. Shifty

Honfleur is a lovely little port and you can spend a few hours wandering around looking at the harbour and the wooden church. There are lots of restaurants and shops, got some really nice pear cider from there once. There is a cheapish Premiere Classe just outside the centre with lots of parking.

Try and avoid the main roads going down there (A29/E44 and A28/E402 etc.) they are just mostly dull dual carriageways. It adds a fair bit of time but try and stick to the D roads. You get to see the countryside properly and pass through the villages. Much more interesting.

Also, while you are up that way, if you haven't been take a look at the Blockhaus in Éperlecques. Museum that was a V2 rocket bunker during the war. Worth a visit.

Definitely will on the way back to Calais Thumbs Up

I just booked the next night at this place
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Hotel+ibis+budget+Honfleur+Centre+Ville/@49.4175299,0.2270549,14.63z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x47e033bd0b4d4fb9:0x206f20c5325e20f2!2sRue+des+Vases,+14600+Honfleur,+France!3b1!8m2!3d49.4179676!4d0.2393136!3m4!1s0x0:0x2d7a9143fd0f0d76!8m2!3d49.4184871!4d0.2377497

Now I really don't know where to go, I have a feeling I should make my way back up but my return ferry is at 8pm so I don't necessarily need to be that close on my last day...

So where should I go for the last 2 nights?

Is it easy to get in and out of Paris? I haven't seen the Eiffel tower in person since I was about 10 years old so that might be nice

Thoughts on Rouen?

It's a nice 2 hour ride through the national park and seems like a nice location.

Paris is not for the feint hearted. Traffic is mental, easy to get lost or end up on some random underground toll road you didn't intend to be on.

Bear in mind you will need a Crit Air emission sticker for Paris https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=317903

I'll just avoid Paris Laughing

I just booked my room in Rouen so now I just need to figure out where my last stop will be between Rouen and Calais, hmm...

Are there any other silly regulations I should know about in France?
