Just heard it on the news that the great man has died earlier today at the age of 83.

I had the good fortune to meet him a couple of times, what a gent he was. He should have been knighted years ago. May he rest in peace and thank you for the wonderful legacy and memories of my youth.

It is a real shame he wasn't a CBE, but in the end he will be remembered for what he did rather than what a few people in "high" places thought of him.

I think the honours system's wank anyway, but Surtees achieved something which will most likely never be repeated.
