Having recently aquired a 2litre volvo 240, the first thought to cross my mind was how many pieces can I cut it into and what can those pieces be used for? Initially my hubby and I pondered over the idea of finding a frame to accomodate the beastie and manipulate the engine to be carried on two wheels but sadly we had to come to terms with the fact that it just won't work. We have however decided to build a trike and not let that monstrous engine go to waste, what I need to know is what problems I'm likely to experience and if you can suggest some time, labour and marriage saving solutions in advance and any reccomended suppliers for specialist parts?

If you are gonna build a trike using an engine that size, it will probably have to be Single Vehicle Approval tested as a car under the new rules, by reason of the weight the chassis will have to be.

This means (among many other things) that it has to comply with minimum radius rules. Upshot of this is that it has to be closed in with bodywork. The SVA test has essentially made the big "Essex Style" trike a thing of the past.

There is some helpful stuff on the DVLA website, if you can keep the weight down and the wheelbase small you MIGHT get away with SVAing it as a Motorcycle, not sure of the exact figures.

Sorry to piss on your bonfire. Neutral
