Rattus norvegicus and probably his family are living under a section of decking in my back garden.

So far poison in various guises hasn't worked and nasty horrible bone crunching traps are a no no in a household with 2 females so the gun is back out. Funny they are quite happy with me shooting them but not crunching them in a trap!

The gun has been sighted in at about 25 yards which is where the little bugger runs along fence.

Going to try a bowl of peanut butter to see if I can keep him still long enough to blow his little brains out. Thumbs Up

Has anyone any other suggestions? A cat is not an option. Laughing

Phone your local council, they'll often get rid of them for you for a nominal fee.

Tell your two females to get rid of the rats themselves or shut the fuck up!

Brings back memories of one happy summer afternoon plinking rats as they scurried across the garden to nick the dogs' food. Tin of cheap dog food will keep them occupied long enough. Make sure you have a save ricochet proof backdrop. You need head shots for a rat, they're tough little bastards.
(I wanted to use my .45/70 Marlin but the missus wasn't too keen Laughing )

Make sure you fix any bait down or they will run off with it.
Make the bait not easy to get to but inviting.

leave the bait out for a few days before you start the shooting regime to give them time to get used to the bait.
Rats are neo-phobic (scared of new things) so if they have had a few days to get used to the change, they will hang around longer and thus give you a better chance of getting a bead on one Thumbs Up

REMEMBER your backstop Shocked

This is why you use peanut butter etc. which they can't carry off. Thumbs Up

Or Nutella.
We used to use those toys that people put doggy treat in that keep the dog occupied.
They are robust enough to take a hit if you f*ck up your shot and made of hard rubber, so they are washable as well.

I have a 15" t.blondi that would take care of that problem lol.
Guns are a good idea though, have some fun too. Had a infestation when the genius house builders made the grate out of plastic instead of metal in the communal bin area. Do yourself a fun favour, use hollow point .22 rounds nothing like splitting a rats head in two.

Use bacon soaked in peanut butter, they cant resist it.

I haven't done pest control for a while but peanut butter was my favoured bait.

If there's space for it variations on this bucket trap look worth trying.

The simplest version only needs chicken wire on top with a funnel entrance.

I have a sheet of 6mm ply put along the fence as a back drop and a bowl of peanut butter and dog food out for him/her. A nice last meal for the condemned Praying

My daughter, who is against the big nasty trap, wants a go at topping Mr. Ratty with the airgun. I still don't understand women after 59 years on this earth.

The gun is by the side of my chair. French windows ready to open. Bring it on. The 6 nations, the EFL final and potential potting the rat. An enjoyable Sunday afternoon is in store. Thumbs Up

You might want to put a bit off old cloth over that ply to stop ricochets coming straight back at you Shocked

Surely they'll just embed themselves into the ply, or pop back with very little force?

You would be surprised how much force they can come back at you with Shocked , enough to give you a red Indian marriage dot on your forehead Shocked

I know from bitter experience Laughing

Yep, plywood seems to give them extra velocity. An old phone book or two or duvet/blanket behind the target area is a better bet. If you need anything bigger than that you're not up to hitting a rat.

No ratty so I tried a few shots at the plywood to see what happened. Direct on the pellets embedded themselves into the wood, I had to shoot at quite an angle to get it to ricochet.

I'm using domed pellets specially for pest control, would that make a difference or perhaps it's just crap plywood as the pellets go right in. The gun is a Gamo Varmint Stalker Barricade .22. What a fucking silly name for a gun, typical yank, Rolling Eyes

Anyway, hopefully tomorrow will be a nicer day and Ratty will come out to play.

It's a rat, moved into my garden, probably with it's whole family and not paying rent. It's probably carrying biological weapons of mass destruction, the Black Death to be precise. They deserve to be eradicated, Tony Blair said so. Thumbs Up
