Helmet cam advise

I want to get a helmet cam but don't know what to get I've seen a lot for £20-£40 but are they good? They all claim 1080p etc but do you Get what you pay for ?
Has anyone else used these cheap ones off eBay/amazon or am I just best off saving up and buying a GoPro?

Do you want good sound as well as video quality?
Goxtreme 2.7k (argos with loads of brackets and fittings) is good for video better than my go pro hero. Day/ night good video quality but may as well not have a mic because sound is pretty much non existent.Next to a 100W guitar amp and sound is quiet. If you want both try find a cheap 2.5k goxtreme and mic up. I have both models the 2.5 is better but more expensive.

Aldi are doing a 4k action camera for just under £50 at the moment.... which I'll upload a couple of videos later if I get a chance

You do need 1070p otherwise you wont capture licence plates at anything other than very close range and for evidence in the event of crash you might need that.

I use a Sony AS30V which is around £100 and I've been using it day in day out for three years. What's important if you attach a camera to the bike is image stabilization. You need this to counter vibration on the bike. If attached to your helmet you wont need this.

I would advise that you buy a cheap cam first to find out how you like to use it then splash out on something more expensive when you know what really works for you. If the Cam is for your helmet then a bullet style cam is better, lower profile quieter. If attached to the bike then the bigger squarer type is ok. Also for attaching to a helmet look up the 3M hook and eye (Velcro type stuff) sticky back pads, they're like Velcro designed by Batman!

A good cheap bullet style cam for testing is the chilli-tech cam. Not great video quality but good functionality and tough.

I started with a cheapo £30 cam from Aldi and it was great - but I wasnt happy with the extra weight of it being mounted on my helmet (oo-er).

Quality was good though.

I moved up to a Sena 10c so I could get rid of my bluetooth adaptor at the same time. Cant even tell its there - but it is pricey!

You really do get what you pay for. Reliability on cheap cams is a lottery, battery life is usually way lower than claimed as is recording time.

My experience of very cheap cams ...

I currently use a pair of Vivitar DVR480 units. They're discontinued but do come up on Amazon once in a while.
Only 720 resolution but reasonable video quality.
Sound recording pretty awful on a bike.
1000mAH rechargeable batteries last a couple of hours or more.
Recording time is generally between an hour and a half and two hours before you hit the FAT32 file size limit, though occasionally the limit hits at forty-five minutes, usually if I'm stuck in stationary traffic for a long time.
Standard camera tripod mount fitting, comes with a few mounts. I have one screwed into the side of my helmet, another on the back of the bike.
Reasonably water resistant with the waterproof sleeve fitted. Even if they do get wet inside they seem fine once they dry out, I've a lot of experience of this.

So for a cheapo first try with action cams I'd recommend them.

I started with an SJ M10, same as an SJ4000 but in a different shape. It was £25 new with a few mounts. Image quality was absolutely fantastic, and it coped with fast moving images and dark to light transitions admirably. Only trade off was audio was atrocious with no port for a mic. Also had a hard time finding editing software for its .mov files too. Depends what you want out of it I suppose. Use a GoPro Hero 4 Silver now though.
