PostPosted: 12:22 - 03 Mar 2017    Post subject: Should I Sell Second Bike? Reply with quote

Hi guys,

I was wondering what your opinion was on whether or not I should sell my second bike.

I currently own a ZX9R-E1, which is in great condition, with ohlins shock and springs, and I also have my ZZR600 that I've had since I was 18. I also have a diesel saab 9-3.

Their values are roughly:

ZX9R - £1800
ZZR 600 - £600 with MOT and work
Saab 9-3 - £1500 to £2000

I'm now 26 years old, living at home with my mum, and I guess I feel that I probably shouldn't have 2 bikes as I don't use them both enough to justify it. The insurance for the ZX9R is the same cost as the ZZR 600E9, and I don't think I could justify paying to insure 2 bikes at the same time (but could rotate).

The advantage of the ZZR 600 is it's a whole lot comfier than the ZX9R. The 9R is set up for shorter hard runs, than touring. I could adjust the suspension for a compromise though and just have one bike.

Now, I don't really need the money for the ZZR 600, and it has saved me money in the past by coming off it twice, rather than the 9R. It does have some concerning issues though, that I'd need to sort. The camchain is stretched and needing replaced. Other issues are not a problem (it's been sitting up, but easy enough to clean carbs etc). I could happily take the engine out and change the cam chain too, but I'd do the lazy masterlink method, rather than splitting the cases.

Both bikes sat there doing nothing for over a year, as I had some traumatic events that messed me up (still messed up, but aren't we all Laughing ). I started fixing up the 9R again (nearly finished), and realised that I need to be riding bikes again, as it's had a positive impact.

I'm not in a position where I particularly need the money for the ZZR600, so selling would be purely to free up space, and so my time was concentrated on maintaining 1 bike and 1 car. My car will be needing to go off the road soon though, as I'll need to fit a new flywheel and clutch, so it might be useful to have a hack. Then again I could just use the 9R and keep on top of maintenance.

I'm pretty much a "bikes are just bits of metal", but if I'm being honest, I'm more attached to the ZZR than I am my 9R, so perhaps I'd regret selling it.

Do any of you have bikes that are nothing special, that you regret selling?

Thanks for any advice Smile

Apart from "sell car"...

Keep the one you like the most, if you don't need the money, disregard what you'll get for the other one, and enjoy the shit out of the one you keep. Only you can answer which one you should keep.

Sell both bikes and car. Use the money to move out. You shouldn't be living with your Mam at 26

Good suggestion. I could try again and see if that's a suitable option now I'm a bit older. I used to have 2 sets of NCD, as I always found it was cheaper to insure individually, but I let one run out (>2 years).

I actually ran 2 bikes only for a while, but I'm now in a situation where I'm having to carry large objects etc, so isn't as viable an option, unfortunately. I'd happily go back to 2 bikes though! Smile

Thanks dippy. I think I'd enjoy the power of the 9R more, than keeping the ZZR 600, but the ZZR is a great bike for more relaxed rides and longer distances. I'll need to do some thinking.

I completely agree Northern Monkey. I would like to move out, but I'm holding off until 2018 as I'm a student. My mum has been in hospital recently so I feel I need to be with her. She lost my dad recently, and another family member made an irreversible decision to leave.

How old are you? I'll hazard a guess at over 40.

Currently it is a bastard for anyone young to buy anywhere.

If you rent somewhere you get a shitty place that you throw 1/2-1/3 of wages at for nothing back. Add to that after a year or 2 you have to move because... Landlord wants to sell, Landlord wants a family member to move in, Landlord is putting the rent up £300 a month because he can. All of those happened to a couple I know over the space of 5 years. This is a huge upheaval not just the moving which they are fortunate enough to have a great group of mates (me included Wink ) that happily help them move. But the bigger problem is finding somewhere. The market is crazy at the moment. Places are on the market hours before they are snapped up both of these guys work long hours and can't easily take time off to view them.

So you finally get fed up being shunted from place to place every 18 months going through loads of stress and decided to try to buy somewhere, you need a deposit. Which is nigh on impossible to save because you are blowing so much of your money on rent. These guys are not 'poor' at least they shouldn't be one is a manager in a laboratory and the other works in 'high end' retail.

It's even harder if you are single.

I moved out of my parents place when I was 28 I bought somewhere with my Girlfriend, when are both fortunate. We had inheritance from Grandparents that combined with savings we could use for the deposit.

Heres the real kicker, our mortgage, on a 5 bedroom semi is 2/3rds the rent those friends were paying for a ropey 2 bed flat BEFORE the landlord put it up by £300 a month.

In this day and age there should be NO shame at living with your parents in your 20's

*My Friends had a happy ending, they saved and borrowed money from family and have bought a Part buy part let flat. So at least now they are paying less and it a place that is theirs that they aren't going to get kicked out of.

I would have the zx6 off you in a heart beat but I already have 3 bike & 2 cars that I don't have the space for Rolling Eyes therefore I would suggest the problem is not having to much stuff for the space available but not enough space for your stuff!

Find a woman,
move out (long shot on a single income),
buy more bikes Thumbs Up Mr. Green

1) Stay with your Mum. If she is happy having you and you have no reason to move out, don't. But DO start saving for a deposit for when you want to go.

2) Sell all 3 vehicles.

2a) Buy a newer car that's cheaper to run, won't need new clutches and flywheels soon and isn't a Saab 9-3.

2b) Buy 1 bike that you really like that ticks all the boxes.

It you don't specifically need the ZZR money I wouldn't be in a rush to sell it.

If you haven't got a spare hack bike then you'll be even less likely to keep on top of maintenance for the ZX9R. Razz

As long as you don't explode the engine or anything along those lines then it's not going to depreciate more more.

Have you got anything specific in mind to do with the money if you were to sell it? The cash could get the ZX9 and your car both working properly and then you'd have less need for a backup spare hack bike.

Sell both, buy one bike that does both. Or something completely different.

Don't get attached, they're just lumps of metal and plastic. You go down that route and suddenly you've got a cupboard full of empty take-away trays. That you've named.

As you don't need to sell I would keep both. I have car (main transport) and two ZX6R's at the moment. Planning on selling one of them and getting something more comfortable for longer rides but that is likely to be something like a 1000 fazer. Hardly a sensible choice for a bike that will do 2k a year max. BUT............
Bikes are for fun stuff and you can never have too much fun.
Only thing I would add is get the ZZR sorted so that you can sell sell it quickly if the need arises.

I'd say you've overestimated the value of the ZX9R and underestimated the value of the ZZR.

Coming from somebody with a ZZR who's recently taken a shine to the idea of a ZX9R.

I agree with Polarbear.

I don't see any need for a young bloke without a family to transport around to have a car the size of a Saab 9-3 and one that will cost a fair bit to run. I'd be swapping the car for something a bit newer and far cheaper to run unless your in it all the time pounding motorways for a living?

You've had the ZZR since 18, so I suggest your pretty attached to it. You won't miss the 9R if it's not your go to choice of do everything bike, and besides there's plenty of cheap 9R's out there for several reasons, so you could easily get another one down the line if you feel like you miss them too much.

Car gone, ZX9 gone, you'd then need to decide on.how much the ZZR needs spending on it to get it running really well and not wanting for anything mechanical or electrically? If it's £200? 500? Etc. Then weigh up how much you could realistically spend if required, before you could just go and buy a minter from the classifieds? There in the difference is the budget.

Definitely start putting something away for getting onto the property ladder too. Your probably depending on your location about the last generation of first timers that'll ever get to own a home in their lifetime.

N-1 is the formula for married bikers. N being the number that makes the wife walk out.

I've reached 4 and don't think I've managed N-1 yet.

My wife-elect goes in the garage so rarely that she didn't even realise I had two bikes in there at one point until I slipped up and complained about lack of space.

At four though, she'd get suspicious because I'd need to buy a shed to store all the gardening/BBQing tackle that's taking all the rest of the space in there.

Clearly you misunderstand the purpose of the spare room and the lounge.

I can see me getting to that stage. I've yet to sell a bike. Actually that's not true, I sold the CG then ended up buying it back and overhauling it completely...

Lounge is on first floor.
Spare bedroom is on second fooor.

Maybe if I installed a large shrubbery?

Then use the ground floor hallway, it's an acceptable place for a bike
