|

So a relatively recent manufacturer has popped up, 'mutt' motorcycles. They seem to build 'custom' 125's built using Chinese parts for double the price of the Chinese bike they took them off?
I think the bikes actually look quite nice, but do you think the extra price tag is just for the badge and the 'made in the UK' thing. or do you think they are genuinely worth the premium cost compared to their Chinese counter parts?
https://www.muttmotorcycles.com/
here is a VERY similar lexmoto for half the price:

Sorry, apparently you can't ask that as they don't want us to give you any information which will inform or influence you.

I'd go for the lexmoto at half the price. Mutt motorcycles aren't really built in the UK, at best they're assembled and slightly butchered in the UK. |

Mutt may be moot unless they can scam their way past Euro4 as a small volume "manufacturer".
There's a Mongrel (I think) that parks up near me, owned by an old(er) chap. It looks nice enough, and it does appear that they've put some parts and time into it: single dial, idiotic cut down mudguard, small rear light, flattish bars. There may be non-joke brand tyres on it too, I don't recall.
But no, I don't think it justifies the premium over the Lexmoto. There's maybe £100 of parts on in it, £250 tops even if they've changed the rubber. Paying an extra grand on top of to keep your hands clean just in order to get a "production custom", bike, no thanks - it's Hipster Tax. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

If you're that outlaw, why limit yourself to a 125 with L plates? Just Fireblade, no plates, breaking tha law. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

I'd take that at face value. Note that they're not claiming that zed partner actually makes engines for Suzuki, it could be the staples for the seat cover. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Then there are all the other 'brands' Roger mentioned which are just rebranded various makes.
Do any Chines manufacturers market their own bikes a la, Honda, BMW, etc. etc. |
They do in Asia, but breaking the Western market was done by importers, as no dealers were willing to either sell them or service them, it is a problem still today.
Worth remembering that it started with the "bike in a box" that you assembled at home, with just a parts guarantee if the bike sold in sufficient numbers, otherwise you were going to be left in the cold, still a risk for those that buy Chinese. Rogerborg has a blog about the whole thing https://bikeinabox.blogspot.co.uk/2009/03/unboxing-day.html He paid the princely sum of £550 for a Huoniao that Lexmoto later on sold as the Vixen for £849.99
Zongshen was recently in Barcelona with their own stand and the RX1 as flagship, but they still depend on those importers that has been successful and developed a good dealership infrastructure. ____________________ A por ellos, que son pocos y cobardes. |

So the general consensus is its all form over function and your better off with a YBR125?
They look kinda nice, far too hipster for me, but a friend of mine that wants to get a 125 for around London is thinking of one for her first bike and she would look great on it... I'm thinking parts and serving would be a bit of a pain even if you could justify the initial layout? ____________________ [Current Bikes - GSXR-750 K5 & C90-97 ] [Previous Bikes: Runner 125, YBR 125, GS500, Bandit 600, Hornet 600, ZX6R-99, C90-99, R1-99, XT600E-04, GSXR-750 K4, CRF250L '16] |

Parts shouldn't be too bad. It's the common Suzuki copy-engine, and most of the cycle parts and controls are going to be universal. You may have to figure out the appropriate 'base' bike though.
But no, I don't think they justify the premium price.
If she really, really wants to go full hipster, and has money to burn, then I really, really would suggest getting a Lexmoto Valiant (should be a few pre-reg ones kicking around) for ~£1250 less. Maybe change the rubber if it comes with ditchfinders, although I was actually OK with the joke brand Manlung tyres on my fake-away. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
