A friend dropped off his Fazer 1000, had the 7000 rpm EXUP valve fault indication on the rev counter. Been quoted at least £400 to repair by the area Yamaha dealers.
Had a few EXUP's in my time, usually they graunch up a bit, cables off and a good twist on the spindle end usually clears the clag for a good few months.
This one was solid.
Had to drill out the bolts on the end plate, in fairness, the valve has not been looked at in 30,000 odd miles.
This one is jammed solid, even got the torch on it, nothing budging. Don't want to get medieval on it, the valve unit isn't very robust.
Looked on the net for a new unit.... £400.... plus VAT!! The end plate is a further £90.... plus VAT!! Jesus, whats it made of!!???
Needless to say, he's not happy and I've spent best part of a day messing with the damn thing.
So, if you have an EXUP valve, make sure you strip and grease it... regularly! If anyone has one, please feel free to PM me.

Cheers

is it stuck in the open or closed position?
i had one "fail" on an r1 a few years back.
if its stuck open then just throw the cables away and get on with your life.taking the cables off stops the error on the clocks.
on a litre bike are you going to miss the imagined few hp low down.

Its stuck halfway. It makes town plodding a pain and definitely robs top end.
My thoughts are to junk it and make up a blanking plate for the collector box.
Can't see it making that much difference to overall performance, willing to be advised.

It's an option but you could end up with some low down flat spots.

Would get the bike usable again though.

I had the same problem sorting a friends FZR1000Ru Foxeye. The shaft had seized on the graphite bearing in the outer cover.Once the cover was removed I was able to knock the shaft through the bearing.I then machined a phosphur-bronze bearing and pressed that into place before reaming it to clearance.

There is a friend on www.exup1000.co.uk who refurbishes the powervalves on Exups and does a really good job of it.PM me if you want to go that route.

Thanks for the replies.
Used an acetyline torch on the damn thing, tried knocking the shaft through the end plate, wound up mushrooming the shaft end.
I'll wait for him to get back to me as to how he wants to proceed, a refurb definitely looks like its on the cards, love to know how he does it!
