i've always wanted a supermoto, especially the 690 smc but there are so few for sale i feel like summer could be over by the time i find one!

most of the ktm's for sale are brand new and i'm not interested in brand new.

how much worse is a drz? would i be dissapointed do you think?

Considerably, I'd say.

I've had both a CCM404e (DRZ400E engine in a lighter chassis with better suspension than the DRZ) and a KTM690 Enduro.

Both I've had in SM setup too.

The KTM does feel a bit bigger (though on the scales compared to the road version of the DRZ quite similar), but has a much more flexible engine.

I'd love to see a single wheelie from you.

However, yes, 690 all day long.

Does it have to be an SMC? Plenty of 690 dukes and supermoto's about.

fazers arent the best for wheelies anyway... and he had a vara before that.. and that couldnt pull a wheelie because any power would strip the output shaft weld...

and before that was a chingchong douchebag 125 so that wont lift...

when did he learn to wheelie? on his r6 or his days as a rider for bsb

Worth considering the Husky 701 also if you're not looking at track use. Essentially a 690 SMC but engineered in such a way that it's reportedly more usable on the street. Quite rare and even more expensive though.

Why? It is heavily based on the 690 SMC. No less reliable or high strung. In fact it's less high strung. It isn't a competition bike. The service intervals are 6200 miles if I remember rightly.

The drz might be a fun town bike, but I know a guy who bored and stroked his after he grew bored of it...

As for the KTM690smc, what is a supermoto?..

A dirt bike with road wheels. That KTM might be able to go on dirt but it's probably not the bike most would pick, no idea how the motor performs, but and EXC with road wheels would be my choice.

A KTM500 exc, with excel wheels and better front brake...

Thats way you'd get proper performance and better off road use, but is still a bit big for more focused off road.

I guess the problem with brutal singles is practicality, for road use the most punchy engines need regular oil changes and valve clearance checks,.

This I guess is why people choose more road bias bikes but then power won't be the same. I'd sooner ride a road bike with renthals, with big rear sprocket, than a tame supermoto... I'd not do distance on a 4 stroke single, but I would on a stunt bike with semi sensible gearing. 1t down front, 2 to 4T up back.

Each to their own.

Thought about this topic when I saw this the other day but forgot to post it Embarassed Cat C but a 'good' price if that doesn't bother you.

With the above that's why I wonder if the Duke would be a better road bike.

Very well on dirt; I did my first hare and hounds on my 690 enduro.

Yes, it's a chunk heavier than the competition bikes, but we're talking the same weight as a CRF250L - which is considered a decent trail bike.

As it goes, I did surprisingly well in terrible boggy conditions - I would guess that the tall-geared engine gave well separated power pulses to allow the rear wheel to grip where others were just spinning.

Power is easily a match for the competition bikes and for the majority of things the 25% extra weight isn't really noticed - however it does have the real zing in chuckability than the service intervals in hours gets you.

drz with road tyres is fun as hell.. but not so much when it comes to throwing it around the lanes...

however it is also fun on dual compounds when you just want to rag round the bends and sit in 3rd, give it a little tug on the bars and skip into 5th and relax whilst saving the front tyre.

not that ive been doing this non stop since getting the drz...

spine isn't going to thank me but its damn fun!!

only criticism.. cruising at 50 is piss boring and no fun on any roads without traffic to hold you up and make you cruise at those speeds... feels god aweful at 90mph...

i can cope with town riding and little lanes but anything where you can easily sit at 80 is so so bad!! feels like youre doing 20mph forever

Drz you will get bored of, too heavy and not enough power.

If you cant afford a 690 smc get a RFS KTM a 450 or 525 with excel wheels.

power wheelies in 4th are always fun Laughing
