Little update:

Had to move the bike on the drive today. Tight spots on the chain are now way too tight. Problem seems to have escalated quickly and it almost definitely is the chain Laughing

Got a new one along with some sprockets all on their way in the post for tomorrow or Monday.

Old news now but might as well give some closure.

Got new sprockets and chain on today. Bike runs like a dream again, heh.

Old chain was in a pretty poor state. Tons of stiff links.

How much up and down chain slack have you in the middle of the bottom run?

About an inch each way now, maybe a touch more.

I don't think the original problem was tightness/slackness anyway. It was chain oldness, and probably poor maintenance even though I thought I was on the ball with it. I guess a chain needs even more oil than I realised.

I found a good run through the pissing rain would leave a wet lubed chain completely dry. Chain wax is more tenacious, the downside being that it also clings to crap off the road and turns into thick, sticky muck, so it needs to be cleaned off and reapplied every week. Swings and roundabouts I suppose.
