Garage door options

So then, new garage door time.

Insulated, secure, motorised. Cannot live without those three. But roller, sectional, horizontal-sectional, which brand, etc. I haven't really got much of an idea.

I kind of like the horizontal sectional idea as I wouldn't need to open the door all the way to get a bike in, but they do take up a fair chunk of space inside. Same for a sectional going up, I suppose, but at least I could put shelves above it.

Anyone with golden experience please?

In regards to roller, helped father put one up over the summer.
£1,700 all in, impressive strength, as each section is hollow so I suspect it will help retain heat and motorised.
If you take this route, measurements are very important (made to fit).

Would order one tomorrow if I have £1,700 spare

I have a motorised roller blind type. Looking at your criteria:

Secure: tick. Strong door and the roller mechanism locks when it has stopped. It does have an alarm built in too, but this looks a bit more show than use.

Motorised: tick. It's a bit slow but very cool to push a button (remote or hard-wire) and just walk/ride away as it closes.

Insulated: not so tick. The door itself is made of hollow sections so probably offers some insulation but there is a small gap at the top where the roller rolls. It has rubber strip on the bottom and pushes hard on the floor when closed. The side runners are quite snug but not perfect. That said, I have the house boiler and hot water tank in the garage and it is always warm in there in the winter (warm enough to work at least).

The roller does rob a bit of height from door aperture, so if you need this height, measure carefully (we can still get the Skoda Yeti in there, but it's close).

In a perfect world I would like a single personal access door built in so I can nip in and out without waiting for the whole thing to roll up and down, but I did get it on the cheap.

I've had a Horrman door the same style as above for the last 5 years or so. It's been reliable and sturdy. Can't say it does a great job of retaining heat but I'd say it seals well as I have to open the window on the catch in the winter otherwise when I bring the car or bike in after a run I get some condensation on the roof.

Motorised are not always secure, from my knowledge there's usually a secondary mechanical way to open them if the power is out or your key fob gets fubar.

Side and central bolting points make up and over a bit harder to breech but the door will always be the weak point, unless you also have a window or plastic roof.

Once they're in they have all of the tools to get the door open and your bike free from its anchor, which I hope you have and always use.

Think of the door as an additional layer, not the only one. Garage alarm and cctv with alert function plus baby monitor and pir lighting should see you right.

Best thing ever.

I had identical requirements. After contacting a few local door suppliers who simply weren't interested I decided to sort it out myself. Bought an insulated roller door, with three remotes via eBay for £560.

The seller was great and if you're ok using a drill it was a doddle to fit.
