Wanting to get my first car (possibly an MX5) soon but the insurance is beyond a joke...With my bikes I'm with bikesure as they are consistently the cheapest by a large margin.

What car insurance places will insure a young driver for not a lot of money? I've found the best to be with Direct Line at the moment. One of the reasons it's expensive is that I have 1 fault claim and 1 non fault claim in the last few years and even though they are on bikes, Direct Line take them into account.

I called Admiral and they ask for the claims but as they are on a bike they don't use in the costing of a policy... apparently... but then they quote about £3k for an MX5 Laughing

TL;DR
Please advise on how to get cheap car insurance for young person without getting a really shit car (I'd rather just not have a car)

I don't think it's really possible.

My daughter is an HGV driver, with a years experience driving bloody great lorries. She is under 25 and her shitbox Fiat Panda 1.1 is some ridiculous amount. Can't remember exactly but £1500 springs to mind.

Get a van.(then remap it) More useful than a car and just as warm and dry. Also if it's white you can drive like a utter
bastard and other road users just seem to accept it. Wink It's also like a mobile burka. Nobody notices you at all.
Even less if you wear a hi viz vest. Laughing

I've seen some surprised looks on cagers faces when I'm bearing down on them on the motorway at over 90mph
in a 2t Sprinter. At that speed the wake is quite something and I have many amusements watching cars wobble
as I pass them. Nothing car wise that I can really afford will ever go like my bike so sod it a van it is. And my
bike goes in the back so it's like Thunderbird 2. You'd also be surprised how much beer money comes your way when
you have a van. Thumbs Up Took 60quid off of someone recently for moving 3 pieces of furniture 8 whole miles.
Whole job took me about an hour and a half from leaving home to returning again and I picked up another
contact who regularly needs a van and driver for the odd job here and there.

Exactly as above,
16 year old sack of crap 206 burning vegetable oil (free fuel) is for transport.
Brutal 1999 YZF R1 is for fun.

I'll never be able to afford a properly 'fun' car that's anything like a decent bike so why bother.

But seriously... how shit I don't mind £1500 as I understand that it's quite a typical amount for young drivers, it's just when that becomes much nearer £3k which I assume is due to my fault accident on a motorbike... Evil or Very Mad

I might just wait until January 2018 because then it would have been 3 years and I don't need to tell direct line about it yay.

Regarding getting a van, I did look into that as I'd be happy with either a fun car or a van but the insurance is even worse...!

It also depends on alot of factors, where i came from my car ins was 675 yr same car moved to new location and the ins was 3,400 last year because the postcode. Got round it this year by adding my mother in law to policy and its down to i think 695 yr. Try doing that maybe on a car. Or do what my neighbour does, buy a semi good car and beef it up to more street car. it will be cheaper on insurance and be fun, his cars are all modded but not bad on insurance.

Did you ring Gladiator for van specific insurance? It's a trade insurer, you may have a better price from them.

Tell them you're a landlord or a handyman or similar. Get quote for just the basic vehicle cover and not all the other
trade related insurances they will try to add on like tool cover and public liability cover, goods in transport insurance
and whatnot. My cover is only TPF&T. My other insurances are purchased separately elsewhere .You may
have more luck with them, worth a try anyway. Admiral own them btw.

Sorry there's no magic cheap insurer. As a young driver in London £3000 isn't a bad offer. GoCompare or Compare the Market will reveal the painful truth.

Yh I thought this was the case, I think I'm going to wait until January so I don't need to disclose my accident.

It costs me about £1350 now to insure my CB250RS and my Ducati 900SS Laughing

I have a shitty focus I use to get to work every day (up the M55 and back). <£150 on insurance

I also have a Scoob in my garage which is 360hp+ and will never see a road again (Track car).

I now have a CBR600RR which will poop on both cars for 'fun' round the lanes.

So yeh, agreed as above - cars for a to b. Bikes for fun. (track cars for cos I love Subaru)

Have you tried Adrian Flux? They won't insure me where I live but when I've tried other postcodes (even in slightly shit areas) they've offered a cheap quote on an MX-5 (£675).

Just got off the phone with them... nothing better than £3500 for a 2007 MX5...

I'm on the phone to another company they passed me onto for a cheaper quote now...

Sign of the times i'm afraid, young folk get shafted for insurance these days, but an MX5 probably isn't the best car to buy if you want cheap insurance

Only trick i know of that still works is to add a female driver onto the policy as a 2nd driver, when i was single i used to add my Mum on and it brought the price down a bit, nowadays i add my GF, even though there is no way in the world i would actually let her drive it, lol

Cheap insurance for young drivers? Don't get a typical young persons first car. Look at 1.4 or 1.6 engines rather than 1.0 or 1.1 engines. Look at family saloon cars rather than shitbox hatchbacks.

Your choice of car should be based almost entirely around what's cheapest to insure rather than what car you actually want.

Get quotes from price comparison sites for as many different cars as possible.

I've done exactly that which is why I was looking at 3.0 BMW Z4s and 1.8 MX5s, they cost the same to insure as a shitty micra...still £2200 though Laughing

Well I don't know, that's the beauty of shopping for a car based on the insurance price rather than having any specific make or model in mind. Laughing

Those look like reasonable enough cars to try getting some quotes for.
