PostPosted: 22:05 - 13 Mar 2017    Post subject: 1982 Suzuki FZ50 no spark??? Reply with quote

I am in the US and just purchased a 1982 Suzuki FZ50 that I can not get spark from. When I purchased it, it was about 80% together with the rest of it in a box.
The previous owner said the ignition coil on the magneto was bad, but the odd thing is, I can not find a CDI unit or voltage regulator on the bike or in the box, Suzuki seems to have taken these items off the parts schematic too. My stator/magneto only has 4 wires and everything I see in schematics shows it having 5 wires, the red/white is the one missing.
Does anyone have a 1982 FZ50 that could tell me where I would find or even send me pictures of the CDI box or where it mounts. I cant even find open connectors in the wire harness...
This is a real head scratcher.
Thank you for any help!
Paul

1982, would this model have 6 volt system and a set of breaker points / condenser in the magneto area instead of a c.d.i.?????
I cannot find a wiring diagram for your model but is this similar?

It definitely does not have points. It does have a 6-volt system though. It's hard to say if the schematic is the same or similar, I can't make out the wire colors.
For some reason I just can't find any information on the FZ50's here in the States and the FA50 magnetos are different.

Thank you for the reply and link.
They must have done something different for bikes in the US.
Here is a link to the stator that looks to fit my bike.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/282166629136?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I have no signs of points or condenser, but then again I can not find the CDI or where it plugs in either. It seems this is a bit of a rare bike here and not much info.
The Suzuki on-line parts schematic does not show CDI or points....

Interesting on the stator with points.
My stator has 4 wires, other stators on US bikes have 5 wires....
Suzuki is not making this easy.... I will try to take a picture of my stator and post them soon.
Thanks for your help and input!

Thanks Hmmmnz,
I did come across that picture of the CDI regulator etc but cant figure out a part number, but that one on ebay looks promising (I don't know how I missed that one).
Now to locate a regulator and figure out how they both attach to the harness.

I emailed the guy with the used CDI on ebay and he cant find it anymore... I am starting to think they don't really exist... at least in this part of the world.
If anyone has a CDI and voltage regulator for sale, please let me know

It seems that the 1982 & 1983 FZ50's here in the states use the battery as a voltage regulator and they do not have a CDI unit. Still not 100% certain of that....
The previous owner said he thought the ignition coil on the stator was bad but I am not sure how to test it. Is there an easy test to check if a stator coil or even an ignition coil is good or bad? I have an Ohm meter but am not sure how to use it....

yeah just measure it for continuity,
its just a coil of wire, should measure 3 or 4 ohms,
if it measures in the 1000's or more of ohms its had a brake in the copper, if it measure under half an ohm then its short circuited

Thanks, I will try to check it soon.
I did find a new FZ50 magneto ignition coil (nothing from the FA50 fits this magneto) that is shipping from Japan ($20 including shipping for a genuine Suzuki coil). Hopefully once I get it installed I will have spark. I will keep you posted.

PostPosted: 18:12 - 03 Apr 2017    Post subject: Its running. Reply with quote

Hi, I have been traveling for the last 2 weeks and while I was gone, I ordered and received a new ignition coil for the magneto.
I got home on Saturday and installed it on Sunday, I now have spark. After cleaning the carb the FZ is now running.
After much research, It looks like the 1982 & 1983 FZ50's (at least here in the states) do not have a CDI box or a voltage regulator.
It seems they use the battery as the regulator and they must have incorporated the cdi into the ignition coil.
Thank you all for your help.
