Bit of a strange one.. a few years ago when i was into CCM's, i used to mess about with them outside the garage and one day a random guy came up and said something along the lines of "eyup mate ive just bought one of these and it doesnt work can you take a look at it for me" so i went down and took a look, he only lived down the street. I had to bring the bike back and sort the wiring out, anyway he came for the bike, paid me.. all was good.

Fast forward a few week later, he drops by to show me his new bike, a harley.. turns out he flipped bikes, and we agreed if he bought any that needed anything doing to them hed bring them to me and he would sell them afterwards. A few bikes down the line all was well.. but then one day he brought me a yam yzf426 (i think). I had a quick look but didnt get too into detail. He came up a few days later and asked how it was going, told him i hadnt really looked at it yet, he stayed for a chat and off he went again.

That was about 4 years ago... i still have the bike and not seen him since.

My brother who went to school with his stepson asked him where i could find him to come and get his bike, but he had split with his mum some time ago and they hadnt seen him either..

So i take a look at the bike the other day anyway, just out of interest.. still cba to get it going to i had a look. Its had the frame number ground off. I could probably still read it if i cleaned it up though.

So bcf.. what would you do???

Sounds legit Thumbs Up I'd try to reunite the bike with its rightful owner (without incriminating myself).

What I wouldn't do is mention it to the police in any way.

The only way I could see it going is them taking the bike and leaving it to moulder in an impound yard until it accrues enough storage costs for the yard operators to claim the bike and part it out on ebay.

The previous legitimate owner will probably be found some time down the line and be hit with a recovery bill.

They may or may not then also do you for posession of stolen property.

If it is stolen (and face it, noone grinds the VIN off their legitimately owned motorcycle), you have a moral and personal decision. Keep/move-on stolen property with the risk of you being caught with it or find a way to get rid without being actually associated with it because the UK police cannot be trusted not to do you for it.

Be tempting to wheel it out into the street somewhere a bit away from your house and wait for it to disappear by itself. If you are concerned about it getting back to its owner, leave it somewhere then call crimestoppers from a public phone and report an abandoned motorcycle you think has been stolen. I think that's what I'd do.

That, though.

Never voluntarily involve Dibble.

Don't deal with people who'd deal with stolen bikes.

I'd either part it out, or push it out.

If the bloke wanted the bike back or thought it was worth the hassle of trying to sell, he'd have been in touch by now IMO.

Its not like you've moved house or anything. I kind of agree with Stinkwheel, with a but. Do you want or can find a good use for a possibily non road legal SM or Enduro bike?

If so I'd possibly change the appearance of it a bit, and trailer or Van it to the track/off roading location and just have some fun with it.

If it is a stolen bike, it's an old messed about with one, and as such won't be worth alot to sell or replace. Therefore I'd use it as your off road bitch, but if you don't need an off roader or are not interested, then year leave it in a supermarket car park or similar.

Shame there is no way of knowing whether insurance ever paid out on its theft... If the original owner hasn't lost out then I'd have a new track/field bike.

I'd feel far too guilty if a person lost out though.

I strongly suspect that the only time this'uns ever been "on the road" was when it was being wheelied away from its owner's shed at 2am.

Explain why a bloke that rides a single cylinder bike and not very well in terms of the traffic light GP, hates on all twins, has such strong pre conceptions about them, especially over many bikes he's only heard stuff said about and has never actually ridden?

Why you so love IL4 bikes if your into a 45bhp single so much? And where does the mindset of under 200kg is good and that all bikes over 220kg are fat heavy whores good for nothing?

I'm not sure you would be a great bike journalist to trust their reviews and get good reliable information from on a bikes merits?

Im not gonna sell it as its not my bike. I know how it feels to have a bike stolen, im gonna make another attempt to get him, by going to his last known address, if i get no luck i will just wheel the bike back there, regardless... id ring the police and let them know but im not risking getting myself into bother.

Shame theres no way of finding the legitimate owner.
