I am gearing up to do my first 'proper' job on the bike - a new auto cam chain tensioner. The bike is making a right old racket under load so its time to get it done. I will give it a chain and oil change while Im there too. Problem is, I'm scared senseless about messing up the timing and killing the engine. Has anybody done one of these before? Any particular advice? I just don't have the funds to pay someone to do it, but it needs doing rather soon. I assume that a standard socket set will be enough for it.

How many miles has your bike done?
Has the c.c.t. been serviced / checked before?
"""""""""I will give it a chain"""""""""""??????
Are you talking c.c.??

Pretty straight forward job tbh. Fit a new gasket if one is not included for the sake of £2. You shouldn't have to worry about timing issues so long as you don't turn the engine over with the cct removed!!

The cam chain will last the life of the bike, you do not need to change it, however having the loose noisey chain might wear the guides if left a long time.

The CCTL assembly is a common, known issue. There were many honda part redesigns and plenty of people use a manually set adjuster. I replaced mine at 33k Im now upto 81k so the later 2011? honda part seems to be a permenent fix

Ahhh sorry - I meant chain as in drive chain/the one on the wheel. Figured that if I am going to get all the fairings etc off then I might as well do any other bits that need doing. The bike is currently on 27k miles.

For the cct you'll need to buy or make the special tool/key. I have loads of screwdrivers and none of them were the right fit.

I cut out of 1mm steel from the pattern supplied in the Haynes manual.
Suggest you buy the Haynes manual anyhow, even if you hand it over to a garage.

How sure are you the cct is the source of the noise under load?

Im not 100%, but there is a very pronounced rattle at bang on 5k which I have been told points at the CCT being at fault. Its loud enough that I avoid sitting at 5k Rpm as its just embarrassing Embarassed . I'm hoping its that as I already have the parts.

Im giving myself 2 weeks to do it all (cct, drive chain, proper wash) so lots of double checking (haynes in the post).

Cam chains usually rattle more at idle, then tension up when they're under load.

What a ball ache that was! Its all off, fitting new one tomorrow along with oil change and air filter. I expect I will soon be posting about the dodgy running I am due to experience owing to the 14 odd tubes and pipes that are all unplugged and some are bound to be forgotten.

If you haven't already got some, recruit some small hands to help get the new CCT in. As you have probably noticed it is in a pig of a spot behind the frame.

I did mine without taking the cam cover off to check the timing. I just turned it over by hand to make sure valves and pistons didn't get too intimate.

Up to you whether you risk the same.

The timing was out by one tooth on each cam when I bought the bike so if i'd had any problems with the chain falling off the crankshaft sprocket then I wasn't particularly fazed about it!!
