I was woken up at stupid in the morning by Hampshires Finest to be informed my bike had been stolen. It was found a few hundred yards up the road on its side with the wires cut.

Its a 2013 Yamaha XJ6N.

Question for the workshop. Can this be fixed or do I need a whole new ignition set. The immobiliser was still flashing away on the dash but turning the key in the ignition and the bike is deader than a dead thing.

Is this just a case of soldering the wires back together or is it going to cost me a fortune?

Cheers guys.

If the wiring has been cut then look for a blown fuse,
obviously once the damage is repaired.

Solder it back together with some heat shrink (put on first) to cover the joins.

Hardest part is normally getting access to it or freeing up the loom enough so you can move it to work on.

may be easier to to solder bullet connectors/sockets on each end separately rather than attempting to join wire to wire

...but definitely solder rather than crimp IMO

If you use a decent crimp, they're fine.

Emphasis on crimp, you want the top one (Ratcheting crimp tool) , not the bottom one (crimp fucker). The bottom one will leave you fucked when you least expect it.

Solder the wires back together, if you can't get enough reach, add a small piece of the same diameter wire and double solder, add heatshrink before hand if you've got room then tape it all up.

If the cable isn't going to move much then solder and cover the join with adhesive lined heatshrink - this forms a good seal to stop water ingress and corrosion. If it is going to move then use crimped butts covered with the same heatshrink.

This sort of stuff:

Personal choice is solder but no argument with a decent crimp. IMO the thing to avoid are those dreadful scotchlock type connectors where you push a little bit of metal in

Hi

Solder works, but make sure it won't be moving. Otherwise the soldered wire will weaken and break over time. Several layers of heat shrink will help to support it.

Or use crimped connectors, but use decent non insulated ones with a separate insulating sleeve.

All the best

Katy

Crimp, solder whatever.
I use both depending on the job

One thing to bear in mid with crimps though is if all the joins are in
close proximity, the resulting repair will be a lot fatter than
the original loom, so stagger them if possible.

If soldering, examine the conductors first.
If bright clean copper, yer good to go
if any blackish oxidisation is present you'll struggle to get good solder joints.

Thanks for the replies all.

After pricing up the costs of the replacement parts from where the scroats left it laying on its side when they couldnt start it, I have gone down the insurance route. My no claims are protected and I have been told they wont be affected with my claim and my excess was only £150. Total parts just for the bodywork, mirrors and brake levers cost into the £200+ range and that was without even sorting out the tiny dink in the tank or the electrics.

Their initial conversation and key tapping came back as a write off because of the electrical cutting but they are sending a man out to confirm later today. If they write it off I'll be on the hunt for another bike.

If I am honest with myself, I hope they do. I could buy it back and put it back on the road but to be honest, I bought the bike brand new 4 years ago, I've had a great time with her and I looked at it yesterday when I had woken up and.... Its gone, everything I loved about it has gone. It kind of feels like your best friends shagged your wife. You still love them both but you want nothing more t do with them.

Make sense?

So looking at an FZ8 or a Kwak Z800

Yes, I had a SAAB 9000 a lot of years ago and it was crowbarred into and robbed of its stereo and a few things
while it was parked up in London.Couldn't wait to see the back of it and prior to the break in it was my pride and joy.
It's like someones sprinkled a bit of shit on your food, sure you can eat round that bit and still have some food,
but nobody sane wants to do that and would sooner push the whole plate away.

Shame, seems a waste to go through insurance but I know the feeling about not being the same.

Best bet, they might ask if you want to buy it back Thumbs Up

Crimps would be crap here because of the bulk they would add. Crimps are usually what 4? times the diameter of of the wire.
