The pictures below
The nuts were stuck together and everytime I turned them with the spanner they'd moved together and the threaded part which they go through would turn with them too so I sprayed some WD40 on them and they finally moved well and threaded part stayed still- did a little fiddling. no avail. I moved the fine adjustment all the way in towards the lever turning clockwise to make it as loose as possible from that side- no freeplay at all right now- the cable at the coarse adjustment when I pluck it is taught as hell. Before it was easy to push the clutch arm up with my finger now some real force needed but that as when the cable is pulled as well. I want freeplay down there too i.e push arm a little with little force but cable stays still.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Er ... can you give us any clue about what you are talking about. There are no pictures.

I *guess* you are talking about your clutch adjustment (HAVE YOU CHECKED THE CABLE IS CORRECTLY ROUTED AND CONNECTED?). Is this the handlebar end or the engine end? Or does yours have an adjustment part way along the cable?

edit: Pictures! That's better!

No picture and a sperg wall of text, so I assume you've fucked up the clutch adjustment. Rather than trying to decode how you got into this situation, I'll treat it like fitting a new cable and go back to the basics.

1. Check the cable routing. Make sure it is seated in any relevant cable guides between the clutch lever and the engine, and make sure it isn't getting trapped anywhere (like on the lockstops) or made to bend a really tight angle.
2. At the bars, screw the adjuster in all of the way so that the adjuster and its knurled lock nut are hard up against the lever housing.
3. At the engine end, screw the adjuster in all of the way so that the threaded portion of the adjuster is showing pointing towards the back of the bike.
4. You now have a slack cable.
5. Wind out the course adjuster until you have 3-5mm of free play at the lever.
6. Wind out the lever adjuster until the free play is 2-3mm and feels comfortable.

Those pics don't look right - the threaded portion should be butt up against the sleeve - probably even screwed into it, with the locknut to hold it in place.

Sounds like your clutch is constantly engaging. It's hard to explain how to do adjust it because it's something so simple that it doesn't usually take any thought.

Thought you were letting the garage sort this for you? Just leave it alone. As said above (and countless times on the other shitstorm thread) make sure the cable is routed properly as per the manual.

Still waiting on that one Very Happy

This sounds fucked up. Gears not engaging sounds like clutch is dragging. But the rest of your symptoms suggest the clutch is dragging.

Given what you've been doing, the only thing I can think is that the cable is kinked up somewhere and the clutch is stuck in a 'slightly disengaged' position.

You've screwed the adjuster all the way out - tensioning the cable. It needs to be screwed in.

You also have the locknuts fitted wrong. It should have one on each side of the bracket, so it holds the adjuster in place whether it is being pushed or pulled. Look at the manual.

Have you tried partially dismantling it then leaving it on its side on the pavement while you take a power nap?

Ah yes, I see you have. In that case I can offer no more help than that, I also thought that's how you fix broken bikes.

Get. A. Fucking. Haynes. Manual.

It shows cable routing and explains how not to spaz a clutch adjustment.

Helpful hint:

Take the photos before you touch it. We can then play spot the difference when you put it back together

Only showing "after" pictures makes it like a spot the ball competition (or in this case, spot the fuck up)

Fine- this thread is put on hold then.

FFS!

Wind the nut all the way up the adjuster
Stick the threaded adjuster inside that bent bracket - NOT up to it. INSIDE it.
Wind the nut down to take up the slack

If you ask for further clarification, you have no business breathing without mechanical assistance

Yes, you're very trying!

Why have you not bought a Haynes Manual yet?

Because a set of Whitworth spanners was cheaper?
