How do you go about researching a company's history? I've tried companies house register but that just gives the current status not takover history or if there have been bankruptcy proceeding in the past.

There's a Companies House beta version where you can search returns, mortgages, accounts etc in more detail than the main search facility at companies house.

Companies house is no good as although the company still trades under its original name its now a subsidiary of another company. What I'm trying to find out is how it moved from being a family owned company to getting taken over.

That'll be more difficult. Looking at filed returns as I suggested will tell you about name changes and change of officers (which indicates ownership changes too).

If you're looking for info on why business decisions were taken, you'll need board meeting minutes which won't be available.

Alternatively you could kidnap a senior director and torture them with electrodes (or my favorite, Ed Sheeran tracks) for answers. Otherwise there's no way of knowing why decisions were made.

However it is safe to say that it will have been one of two reasons, either one company rescued the other, or, someone was making a few quid out of the deal.

TL:DR You can't.

HTH Thumbs Up

We're being vague?

Folded arms

OP is being vague as without the name of the company it's quite tricky to do anything. Razz

Problem us the company doesn't really exist except as a name under a parent company called Decconet. Its made harder that the company is called John Smith & Co. There's an awful lot of John Smith companies out there.

There is no company called Decconet. Are you meaning these people? https://www.decconet.co.uk https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/00417021

The John Smith & Co you're interested in, what does the company do, where are they based?

Identifying the company is not the problem. What I want to find out is how it moved from being a family company to being owned by Decconet.

so have you been through the filings @ Ste's link to Companies House?

Acquisitions and disposals should appear there specifically or in the filed accounts

Fuckwit comedy caravaning gnome downstairs made a big deal about how he use to run his fathers company (John Smith & Co) thing is he lives in a little council flat and drives a shitty old volvo. So im of the mind the thick bastard is bullshitting as i would be surprised if he could run a bath never mind a business. Finding out the company is now just a name and owned by another company makes me suspicious. I rather suspect the if he did have anything to do with running his old mans business he probably screwed it up.

I'm reading that as he lives in the flat below yours.

Anyway, simple retort of "so what are you doing here then?"

The guy regularly has a go at me whenever i go outside it would be nice to throw it in his face next time. Granted he could be bullshitting as hes probably not the only one who would have inherited an interest in the business and its very likely "i used to run my father company" translates to "my brothers ran my fathers company while i wandered around the yard with a broom and shovel dribbling".
