Correct.

That is because, (I can safely say, with a battery of evidence in support and, therefore, any argument to the contrary being a load of Bull)
water does not conduct electricity.

A charger is only 240V at the socket, I'm not sure how that could get into the phone and even if it could, the RCD would trip and stop it killing him.

Ah I was reading it wrong, I read it that he rested the phone on his chest...

Even so, the RCD should have kicked in.

He would have to have been using an extension lead as there won't be sockets in the bathroom.

What's obviously happened is that the extension lead socket with the charger plugged in has fallen into the bath.

RCDs for mains sockets in new-build houses only became compulsory in the mid 90s, so it's entirely reasonable that his house doesn't have any. I know that most of my families houses don't.

It's not helped by the media.

I noticed an ad on mainstream TV last night where a bloke was in the bath with his phone.

And charming though the ad is (with the adorable Moose: "what doing?" Wub )

https://commercial-song.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/clearscore_boxer_dog.jpg

... it gives people the idea that its okay to have a phone in the bath.

Maybe it is okay, with such low voltage at 5V, but when idiots take things beyond that, is when it all goes wrong.

As dumb as these things are when you read them, it makes me think, what a tragic waste of a life over something common sense should have prevented.

It's almost too absurd to make up, I mean, you have to be REALLY fucking stupid to do something like that.

It really annoys me that Apple are being brought into this like it's somehow their fault and that they should have issued warnings about the dangers of charging your phone in the bath.

I'm sorry, but the blame lies solely with the deceased (rest in peace.)

It was an extremely stupid thing to do, and anybody thinking with an ounce of common sense would know it.

Ultimately, the society we live in these days tends to try and apportion blame elsewhere, rather than holding their hands up and saying, "You know what, it was my fault."

Didn't you read? We all assume that the mains power was outside the bath and he got electrocuted through the 5V circuit. There's no un-assuming an asserted assumption. Tut Tut

It's like the Apple your iPod goes too loud lawsuit, or the idea phones should have some sort of warning when being used in a moving vehicle. I guess apple should fit a humidity sensor and stop the device from charging in this situation Rolling Eyes

The first thought that came to mind for me was that he has a counterfeit charger.

I can't be arsed to google it at the moment, but some of them are fairly unsafe (tiny gap that if arced will bridge mains to the usb cable). If that happens while you are in the bath with it then you may find yourself toastered.

Would an RCD even save you in all cases?

Let's assume it's a plastic bath - an insulator, filled with water acting as an electrolyte. Current comes down the live, into the submerged charger, through the water (and matey) then back down the neutral. Thus no differential current and no RCD trip.

Obviously if the water is touching earthed pipes and/or an earthed metal plughole there will be an earth circuit, but that's not guaranteed in all cases.

Going by that reasoning you wouldn't even get a shock.
