If I'm waiting to pull out of a side road in my car or van and I see an approaching biker, I always nod to him/her. In doing so I'm acknowledging that I've seen them and I'm not going to pull out and SMIDSY 'em.
They invariably return the nod!

I nod to other dog walkers, if they're also in bike gear.

Nice. I'll start doing that too (think I'll pass on the leather-clad dog walkers tho...)

Remember being on the back of my mates gsx a few years ago now and the "nod" to fellow bikers was a given to and from!

Since passing my DAS I nod at every man and his dog on two wheels...but don't get a lot of nods back!

Is it something I said 😳

You'll figure it out. There are lots of variables in the formula determining whether you get a nod in return. A non-exhaustive list:

1) Bikes. A comparability assessment is quickly made between yours and the other's. Around my way, scooter riders don't expect the nod. But there's more than just scooters vs bikes to consider. A very pricey bike rider will not nod if there's too much of a cost differential between your bike and his. This changes over time as expensive bikes depreciate. For example, Ducati and BMW GS riders never used to nod, and now they do. Riders of retro-styled new Triumph bikes will be next to join the nodders. This strange behaviour may have less to do with snobbery than noobness. Older newcomers to biking tend to buy a new bike straight after DAS, and may even be unaware of the nodding custom.
2) Place. Anywhere around London and probably some other large cities, just forget it. In the country, usually. On famed biking roads, always.
3) Time of day. In the morning rush hour, you just don't acknowledge anyone nor expect a nod back, around my way. Not the done thing. In the afternoon/evening, sometimes. Friday afternoon/evening, always!
4) Weather. In the extremes of good and bad weather, people tend to be more likely to nod. In average weather, the rider of the carefully restored old BSA doing the Reading to Oxford run, being tailgated by an impatient BMW driver will ignore you. On a sunny, warm and clear day, he will nod. In really, really bad weather in winter, he'll practically salute. His behaviour in this regard is the same as that of riders of older BMW bikes (1990s to about 2003) and Honda Pan Europeans. His reasons are his own, and not very interesting.
5) Type of road. Dual carriageway or motorway? No nod. Single carriageway NSL? Probable nod. In an urban, low-speed environment? No nods, but maybe a wave. In suburban streets? Nods but only from small bike riders.

Wheey we've begun the annual cycle of nod threads.

There's a formula (order of threads re-appear) that winter has made me long since forget.

Scooter boy didn't nod back at me today, many sadness. Saying that footage shows I left my indicator on, noob.

What pisses me of is, nod - nothing, nod - nothing, nod - nothing, nod - nothing, sod this I'm not nodding to the next one, the next bike comes along, usually a scooter and he nods, just too late for me to nod back. Then I get the guilt, he thinks I'm a twat because I'm on a big bike and don't nod to scooter riders. Bugger! Nod - nothing, nod - nothing, nod - nothing, etc etc.

Are you sure there wasn't a speed trap down the road?

Yup - I nod at all bikers and give a small wave at those that are passing me. I'm just a pleasant guy.

I pass many bikes during the week going to and from work. I nod at all if I am not busy looking at the world around me, this includes peds. Chances are I put most of them on the road in the first place.

I’m a fat grandma on a YBR. But boobs and long blonde hair hanging below helmet means everyone nods. Laughing
Though also means you can’t stop for a fag without everyone stopping to ask if you’re ok. Rolling Eyes

Yes I do get nods. I just need to point out that although my hi-viz coat is bright yellow all over inc the sleeves, it has not got 'polite' on the back!!

Yup it was pitch black there were no cops around for miles and i was doing the speed limit anyway due to being low on fuel.

Because the computing power of my brain is so vast, I can actually concentrate on the road and think about trivial things like nodding.

Can't you?
