ZX6R project has gone from this

To this

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/DavidHNR/F2a%20018_zpsrji6jvrm.jpg

Plan is to rebuild parts as I re-assemble.
First step get frame / swing arm cleaned up and sprayed.
Wheels, forks, swing arm and engine parts my lad can powder coat for me but his oven at wok isn't big enough for frame.
This can be happening while I sort out the engine.
Shock has had it so going to fit one from a G2 model and get rid of that silly can on the side
Wonder if I can remember how to put it back together

Might be handy if we knew what was wrong with it in the first instance, seems in good nick and "was" well cared for (past tense). Also, you say

So what's up with it?

It had stood outside (under a cover) for 18 months. The fairings look ok but the bike was seriously neglected. Engine has done 48k so a top end strip for valves and cam chain seems sensible. I can check piston tolerances at same time in ensure oil and waterways are clear. Lot of coking evident in exhaust ports. Shock has had it. Lots of minor corrosion.
I like rebuilding bikes and having this in pieces doesn't stop me riding as still have the other ZX6.
Bike was bought to give me something to spanner.
This pic is a good representation of the general state of the bike. No way could I leave it in this state

I would have begun with a thorough service and started her up. Then checked it over for excess noise, top end rattle etc. These Kawa's can stand for ages and start/settle down no probs. Appreciate what you say about being handy with the spanners, but I wouldn't go looking for problems that may or may not be there. Having spent the past four months most evenings in a cold garage getting my gpz500 s ready for the summer, it's a labour of love, not a hobby! Exhaust pipe internals will always look coked up, just don't look at them, it's what's coming out of the can which matters most. Dirty parts - as in the pic - don't necessarily mean failing items.

I'd definitely consider it a hobby but then I build mine in the kitchen where it's warm Smile

Tried that once when the wife was out. Upon arriving home all marital privileges were immediately withdrawn!!

First thing I did was strip the carbs and clean them. Started fine after that.

I like rebuilding bikes. My first one was in 1978. My garage is heated and I have this to ride so no time pressure.https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/DavidHNR/007_zpsysqlrewu.jpg

I've just installed a new kitchen. The bikes stay in the garage unless I want a divorce!

If I had the money for a large enough garage that could accommodate all the bikes I would really like... I guess you know the answer to your comment Wink

If I could afford all the bikes I'd really like the cost of a new garage would be a mere piffle Shocked

Divorce costs + solicitors fees + settlement award = Garden shed for the bike.

Needless to say she who must be obeyed always has the upper hand in these matters! However - I have cunning plan - to build a new conservatory with double doors Wink

I had all three in the kitchen once. The mrs doesn't do any of the cooking or cleaning so she doesn't get a vote!

I wouldn't bother stripping the engine. Give it a service and use it. If it goes bang chuck in another lump. Ain't no one got time fannying around rebuilding four strokes, especially relatively common ones.
