Hey !

Im 18 and Currently hold a Provisional Driving Licence

Can I ride a 125cc (11 kW) with L-Plates holding just the CBT and the provisional ?
I have read that a theory + practical test was mandatory but wasn't sure if this was needed If ride with L-plates.

Also recommendations for a first bike? something to practise on whilst working towards the practical test.

Thanks !

Hard to tell from your wording, but if you already hold the CBT, then yes you are entitled to ride a 125.
You only need to do theory or practical tests when you're gearing up for big boy bikes.
I rode for about 4 years without doing a theory test, although IIRC the CBT only lasts for 24 months before needing to be renewed.

The bike you go for is immaterial really if you're going to rush to the proper tests.
The usual choices are an old CG (albeit increasingly harder to come by) or a CBF if you don't mind a bit of flux(rust).
Along similar lines would be the Yamaha YBR.
If you like the radgey image you could look at bikes like an xlr125, but it won't be comfy and you may turn to drugs, alcoholism, theft, and beating the shit out of your spouse.
So swings and roundabouts I guess.

It really depends what you prioritise?
Comfort? fuel economy? aesthetics? price? etc

Lets not got into KW you're being too technical for my liking. Tut Tut Laughing

Get provisional, complete CBT and gain certificate and then: purchase, insure, tax and M.O.T, if needed, a 125 and off you pop.

L plates must be displayed front and rear. No pillion carrying and no motorway use, other than that bobs yer uncle.

What you've heard applies if you're of the right age and want to get a full license for that category.

I'd want until your 19 to do A2.

CBF/YBR are usual recommendations.

Vardero if you're tall and can find one.

MSX if you're a midget or want a hoon and are rich.

Anything that all get the job done really. Tiddlers are a learning tool rather than a long term investment when being an only bike IMO.

At the moment you can ride soLo with just the CBT, no need to do motorcycle theory. It's bass ackwards and DVSA are talking about changing it, but you're good to go on a 125 for now.

As everything above, but make sure your provisional licence actually has a motorcycle category on the back. I think it's a standard entitlement, but I would never trust the DVLA to get anything right.

One other thing to note is that most learner legal bikes are all much of a muchness when it comes from a performance. That sporty looking machine like a CBR 125 won't really go significantly quicker than a CG125 so you're paying mainly for esthetics.

The YZF-R125, WR125X and a couple of others are slightly quicker but not hugely and IMO not worth the extra price premium unless you're planning on riding a 125 for a long time. I wouldn't bother unless I was was 17 and had plenty of cash to burn. Better to get something cheap and put the savings towards a big bike IMO. For what it's worth I get almost as much enjoyment out of my little CG as I do my bigger bikes.
