I have decided to start a new thread on this as the last one went off track a little (thanks Tef Wink )

A bit of a back story, went out on CG a month or so back, conked out, no juice in the battery to restart it, got it home, charged battery, fired up fine, checked voltage, key off 12.5V, engine running 11.5V, ended up changing the Reg/Rec and got a healthy 13.5V when running.......... happy days

Jump to today, took it out for a quick country lane blast after work, all going well when save thing happened, started to conk out, no power, stalled when clutch pulled in, pulled over, no juice again, barely even enough to light up the neutral light

So, pushed it home (luckily all down hill), put on charge for 10 mins, fired up fine, and back down to 11.5V again............. fuck

So it appears i have somehow fucked up my Reg/Rec again.............. how is this possible?

TL:DR Bike not charging, replaced Reg/Rec and all was good, now not charging again, suspect Reg/Rec gone again

Any ideas what can cause the Reg/Rec to just go like that, or is there somewhere else i should be looking for potential problems

Probably just a shitty reg, stick another one on. If all the wiring checks out id just put it down to that.

just bad luck that you've had 2 go.

2 in the space of a month though, only ridden it about 30 miles

To be fair, it was just a 2nd hand one of eBay, but i don't particularly want to spend £130* on a brand new one for it to last another 30 miles

Only place i can find a proper brand new one is www.bike-parts-honda.com unless anyone has any other ideas where i can try getting one from

Looking at the wiring diagram it looks like a single phase reg/rectifier so you should be able to pick a generic one up off ebay for around £20,if you need any help wiring it let me know.

This is the wiring for my CG 125 ES4, i believe they differ some from from the earlier ones

Looks like a 3 phase rectifier to me, but i'm not great with electrics

Just found another 2nd hand one on eBay for a tenner, think i'll take a punt on that, and if that only lasts a month then i surely have something else wrong

Looks like a common 3 phase RR to me, as found on many's a bike
so there are thousands to choose from

£130 for a new one? WTF?

Why your previous one failed is mystery at the mo
They're normally quite reliable.
I'd get one from say a 500cc+ bike
as it would probably be rated for a higher output than a
125 bikes stock RR

I stuck a CX500 one on my lads Yamaha Majesty 125 and
it worked a treat

Ahh right, good to know, but how would i know which bikes would have a suitable 3 phase Reg/Rec?

EDIT: just looking at a few on eBay now, and there seems to be a fair few regulators with 3 yellow wires (from the stator) but then with 3 other wires (green, red, black) i'm guessing 2 of those are +12V & ground, but unsure on the other, and my wiring diagram for the CG only shows 2 wire (Red and Green) Red looks like +12V, green looks like the ground, so what would i do with the black wire............ confused

After a bit more digging, it appears i need a 3 phase, 5 wire Reg/Rec (3 wires from stator, +12V & 0V)

There seems to be plenty of universal 3 phase 6 wire Reg/Recs, with a 6th black wire, which as i understand is a "DC Voltage Sense" wire, which should be connected to the ignition switch

Can i get away with fitting a 3 phase 6 wire reg/rec and just ignore the "DC Voltage Sense" wire, or do i need to do a bit more wiring work and attach it to the ignition switch

Any advice much appreciated as i am out of my depth when it comes to electrickery

No you can't ignore the sense wire as this can make it float and
the output voltage go too high
You can use a 5 or 6 wire RR from any other bike that has a 3 phase charging system

5 wires have internal sensing and 6 wire external
I have 6 wire RR and just patch the black sense wire to the output wire/battery live
It's been like that for 9 years now with no charging problems at all
and steady output.
