Sigh, it was all going so well...

Just got back in from a short (5mile) ride and when i set off again i got a loud noise...

The only way i can discribe it is the kind of noise youd get puting a drill spinning against a plastic box (just resting against it if you know what i mean)

It happens when i give the bike some stick, above 4/5000rpm (10,000 redline) it dosent slow the bike, make it jerk or anything, the gear lever dosent vibrate or anything either nor does the clutch, it sounds like its comeing from the front...

The tempreture has also gone up, which makes me think...

The fan is driven from the camshaft, (it dosent seem to make the noise from neutral at a standstill though ???) could this be sticking?

Sorry for posting here but i want to have an idea of whats up quick (because it will probably stop me sleeping Embarassed) and theres more likely to be somebody who has had the same problem reading here...

Sound familiar to anyone? (odie, if its this do you think a 650 electric fan could be made to fit?)

Check your assorted plastic covers and your mudguards. Most likely a loose bolt somewhere.

What bike is it? Never heard of a fan on a bike being driven by the camshaft only when it is in gear?

I would go for chain personally, I know this is not at the front, but are you sure that is where the sound is coming from?

I had a noise once on my electric fan, a small stone had fallen into the housing of the blades.

Well its not the chain cause it dosen't have one!!

Yeh about the fan, i might just not have reved it high enough to have it make the noise in neutral (because of the riseing temp i didn't really think it was a great idea to stress the engine)

This is how the fan looks out of the engine and the rad off (not mine, bit much to do to find out its something else)

could it be the fan is stuck but only spins at above 4/5k? either way it sounds baaaaaaad. I'm 80% sure its from the front.

BLIMEH!

Well i found out what it was, after takeing the rad cover off a bolt dropped out to meet me and waited patiently on the clutch cover... hmmmmmm

So after emptying the radiator i took it off, only for the fan to fall from underneeth Shocked **** says i. The fan had been chewed up a bit, not allot but enough for me to go hunting for another...

A year ago (when i got the bike) the same happened only before it left a lovely hole in the radiator, which was bad. Obviously it wasn't put back on properly Rolling Eyes Its got a dose of loctite thredlock (for rad bolts, flywheels e.t.c.) so hopefully it will stay there this time!!! the wrong washers had been used, which i suspect is the reason i'm haveing to mess about like this again..

I'm going to look into geting an electric fan to fit, its going to be a matter of it clearing the cam shaft though, how much CFM would need to be pushed for an efficient rad fan? what sort of wattage would one need? just a thought at the mo...

Just goes to show how a 10p washer can cause so much hassle, and might have cost another radiator rebuild, just because the wrong ones were used in the misty murkey past....

Glad it wasn't anything too serious, zero. Here's to you finding out what the problem was yourself, too! Thumbs Up

Thanks CR, yeh i'm glad thats done with, the sadistic part of me sometimes likes stuff going wrong, because iv'e learnt allot doing just this... cooling system stuff allways freaked me out a bit, but it was easy enough to do (waiting for it to cool down between was a bit of a pain though).

Cars seem relyable enough to let them go for allong time witout worrying about them, apart from brakes the worst that can happen is you stop, if your bike does it while your leaning over on a round about your in allot of trouble, or if you get stranded its allot colder!
