Hi everyone

As you can probably tell by the title, I am looking for my first project bike! I've only been riding since June '15 and I've not had much experience with the spanners on a bike. I am however, currently in a mechanical apprenticeship, so I do have a wide range of mechanical skills. I'm looking for something that I can potentially work on whilst I wait to do my 'A' licence which is around a year and a half away so I have plenty of time! My budget is probably in the range of £1000-£1500.

Any help/guidance will be very much appreciated!

Luke

My first piece of advice would be make sure the project you get is a bike you want to own once you get your A licence. Nothing worse then spending umpteen hours working on a bike then not like it when your done.

Uh... what do you want to do with it?

Butcher it into another god-awful cafe-racer? (95% complete, just needs...)

Fix up a broken one? (please leave it stock)

Strip down a working one and rebuild it?

I think the main reason for me wanting to do this is to be able to say "I built that". Realistically, I think the best option for me would be to strip down a working one and rebuild it.

Don't buy anything previously owned by Arcane.....

Seriously though. Is that your budget just for the starter bike or does it include the parts you may need?

A working one is a good place to start IMO. I would go for a biggish single or twin - less parts to buy potentially and reasonable costs to own and run later on.

To a certain extent, I agree with this. But give me a ratty Z650 (the air-cooled 4, not the new pretender) to do up, and I wouldn't go for the bog-standard option. I've always had a hankering to build a 'special' with one of these, and know exactly what I'd do with it. I wouldn't care what so-called 'purists' might think - I would be building it for me, not them. Alas, never had enough spare cash Sad

Come to that, give me an RD350LC to play with, and that wouldn't remain stock either. But nor would it be a total garage queen when completed.

I think for me it would be all about building the bikes I would've loved to build in my formative biking years, but couldn't afford to/didn't have time to.

Find an SV650.

Strip it, build it. Track day it.
