Hi All,

As per title really, I'm going on an impromptu ski trip to the alps tomorrow morning however my salopettes no longer fit me (by a long way!) so I don't have anything to keep my legs warm/dry. I've got a pair of alpine stars drystar touring textile trousers I'm thinking about wearing. Anybody done this/got a good reason why it's a bad idea?

Cheers!

If you're as crap as me then extra armour on the knees and hips could be useful

went snowboarding recently, was quite surprised by how much bike gear I ended up using.

Thumbs Up Base layers merino thermals
Thumbs Up Padded MTB shorts
Thumbs Up Knee pads
Thumbs Up Polar buff
Thumbs Down goretex gloves

Gloves worked in keeping my hands dry but got wet and heavy. I'd have concerns about the same happening to the trousers.

Depending on the airport/destination a lot of the time they sell gear in the airport (expensive) or you could try the alpinestars at the resort and if they no good buy a pair there, usually not too expensive, again depending where you go.

or even ring around your mates they might have a spare pair

I don't think anybody wants to see that, I'm sure the chat/bbq fogs of old will agree! Laughing

Thanks all, well I'm going tomorrow and they're in by case so hopefully they'll be alright! Laughing

I have army goretex overtrousers which would probably work with a couple pairs of thermal long johns underneath. Only £30 and useful on the bike, hillwalking etc, but probably a bit late if you're going tomorrow!

Have a good trip. Thumbs Up

Wouldn't recommend it especially now the conditions at most resorts are slushy in the afternoon. You should be able to hire some in resort or look for sales. Is there a town with a shopping centre near - they are likely to be discounting the ski gear to make room for the hiking season.

I did a ski season a few years back, in 5 months I went through 3 pairs of dedicated skiing gloves (fell over a lot). As I bought the third pair I remember thinking motorbike gloves would probably work better. After all tarmac has to be more abrasive than snow.

I have returned from the French alps and the verdict is...

YES!!!!!

You can definitely use Motorcycle trousers for skiing. My Alpinestars were actually better then any expensive salopettes I've ever owned! It was so hot though that I ended up taking the liners out of them. Legs stayed 100% dry the entire time and they were very comfy, so overall I'd call it a success! Thanks guys Smile
