I would like to think there is a market for a show that shows 'how to do' car stuff but I'm struggling to think of a format that would work.

Those 'wrecks to riches' yank shows piss me off. In fact most car/bike shows on TV aren't worth watching. It's quite weird that a subject so close to the hearts of 90% of males and quite a few females has so few good shows on TV.

FFS, there are more Tony Robinson history shows worth watching than car shows. Laughing

I'd agree he was the best thing in the programme, but (whether it was to show what you could do at home or not I don't know) he did tend to bodge things, especially in the earlier series. Like doing some body work, then rattle canning it to a poor finish. Or talking about sorting out wiring, then digging out his pound shop style crimp tool and pre-insulated crimps.

The one thing it has above most of the similar car programmes is actually showing him doing a job though - many show mating of major components (engines going in, wheels on) or a bit of metal grinding only.

Maybe it is that more genuine approach that appeals to the yanks, rather than glossy overviews and staged conflicts.

I wouldn't say bodge, but yeah some of the DIY paint jobs he did to engine bays etc. looked truly shit. I enjoyed it because I learnt stuff from the show, and it showed you just how much work was involved. With something like Counting cars they show a before, and an after with minimal insight into what they've done. Totally ignoring the fact 6 months have passed by.

I've always wondered how many times they've picked up a car and it has turned into a money pit which they have ditched and moved on.

I thought all of them did Very Happy There's no way you could actually earn a living doing what they do, it's interesting for the DIY mechanic, but even with totally ignoring Eds labour and equipment costs they usually only make meagre profits.

I think the real idea of the show wasnt how to make money on cars, but on what to look for when buying to restore yourself. They just bundled it into a buying and selling format, which it pretty much showed that you're generally going to lose out if you try to make a living at it, as some cars they are making £300 profit for two weeks work. You'd need to earn at least 4x that a week to keep a company going.

The Peugeot 205 episode started off with one car, with an early dash, and ended up with another car, that didn't have the same dash.

Never noticed that, I'm going to have to watch that again Smile

I have noticed new tyres appear on cars but not budgeted for at the end, in some of the earlier series as well

As Marjay and others have said, cutting the parts of the show that were actually interesting is just wrong, but it's happens all the time, just more dumbing down for iphone generation!

The thing that used to twist my melons though was, Edd would drop the engine out of something, fix whatever widget needed attention, then put the engine back. While the engine was out why didn't he, or his sidekick, clean the, bleedin' engine bay? Mad

I thought of it more as a 'Don't trade, upgrade' kind of mentality where instead of scrapping your old motor because of a few issues if you had a go and got stuck in yourself you might end up with a decent car.

Something along these lines happened to me recently. My rear wiper on my 1 series seized. I was going to buy a replacement sealed unit but then I found that it was £124!! So I dismantled the so called 'sealed' unit, stripped the mechanism, cleaned it, re-greased it with quality grease and then put it back on the car. It now works better than it ever has and it basically cost me nothing to do. That's the kind of thing that I think Wheeler Dealers wanted you to take away originally.

What we're going to see now is fake 'Conflict' and 'peril'. It's going to end up the car version of Dance Moms if Discovery have anything to do with it (don't look it up, someone I know watches it and it's trashy as hell).

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I thought the show ended years ago, I've only ever seen the old re-runs for the past few years. As for the American shows, See banged up car, whining, conflict, more whining and conflict, show a nice done up car End. That was the format for the 3-4 shows of different tiles I see. No more.
