So, I've dropped a clanger with my disk lock. Not quite to Arcane's standards, but a clanger nevertheless.

My cheapo ebay alarmed disk lock can be locked without the key. On one side is the lock, the other side a hole where you put the key in to arm the alarm. I attached the lock to the front left disk with the alarm bit pointing away from the bike as it is easier to disarm it. Unfortunately, I've attached the lock in such a way that one of the wheel spokes obscures the lock so I'm unable to remove the lock with the key.

Find your local pikey camp and offer them a rug and a dag for their help.

oh wow ... I can actually picture it.
Surely a design flaw, but that's eBay for ya Wink

I can only recommend renting some bolt cutters from Braithwaites or similar. unless you can wiggle the disklock around enough to get access but i'm sure you've tried that already?

It's pretty tight access, not helped by the fact I keep my bike in the shed.

I see 3 available options

1: Cut the handle off the key and hope this gives me enough clearance to undo the lock.

2: Get a dremel + cutting disk in the gap between the disk and lock body to cut the locking pin.

3: Cut the body of the lock with a grinder .

I'm trying to avoid bolt cutters as I feel if I slip I may damage the disk.

It's going to be a fun night tonight!

Possibly daft thought:

can you undo the disk? It should then rotate so you can get the key in through the gap in the spokes

if you cut the head off the key you might risk getting the key stuck inside the lock :p heads up I have done this before Wink

At least you didn't lock it up somewhere and then realise when you come to unlock it that the key for it is at home sitting on your kitchen worktop. Doh! Embarassed

Well here it is! Can't believe I managed to do something so stupid! At least it happened at home rather than in the middle of nowhere.

And here's a picture of the offending lock after I dremelled the sh*t out of the locking pin. I did try to cut the key first but I didn't have enough clearance still.

Anyway, it's all sorted now. No children were harmed, I didn't need a Rainpal and I've learned a valuable lesson.

Why didn't you just remove the wheel and then unbolt the brake disc?

The main reason being I didn't have anything to prop the front of the bike up with.

Besides, it only took 28 minutes to remove it my way.

Because he knows he can't be trusted not to do it again.

I've had similar (well kind of) a long time ago with those ancient 'stoplock' things on my car. The type that would snap shut without a key. That's great if you remember to have the key with you.

It actually broke apart with alarming ease around the 'hinge' (if you count bits of folded metal as such!) however once I'd prised the plastic off Sad , I do realise it was an ancient one anyway and before they upped their security. I think it was made in the early 80's if not earlier.

FWIW I do have a later type now that you cannot lock without the key, for what little its worth I know as anyone would simply hacksaw the wheel, not that my car was worth stealing anyway at that time. Sad

I guess my point is that although the 'no key to lock' for a disclock is good news as this topic indicates its also potentially bad news too. I wonder if seeking out one that requires a key to lock it would be worthwhile as it would probably avoid this situation in the future ?

I should point out I've never owned a disc lock though... So I am not aware if such a type exists.

As you were...
