I have to pay a professional registration fee for my work. Ive just discovered i can claim tax relief on it using a P87 form. Im wondering what else I could claim is a work related expense to me. I already get mileage from my employer for using my bike, could I claim for my riding gear etc?

Cheers

on the mileage, you can claim tax relief on the difference between what your employer pays you and the allowable HMRC rates. It should all be on their website.

I don't think you pay VAT on bike gear as it is PPE.

IIRC HMRC rate is 25p per mile, total bloody joke if you ride anything more than a YBR125.

25p per mile means over 50mpg to break even. Acheivable on most bikes under a litre if gentle, but you'd have to drive a very new car to reliably return that figure.

In theory you can claim on your P87.

In reality they tend to reject absolutely everything and will try and fob you off by saying do a tax return if you think I'm wrong.

I had 1000s of clients in the past experience this and experienced this myself.

I just do the tax return.

Think it was my two piece 'Celtic' suit from Hein Gericke which had a label saying 'not protective clothing'.

I'm PAYE so tax no my tax situation anyway so surely doing my own tax return would just tell them what they should always know. I'm not surprised to hear they would try and reject it but I'm getting a new helmet this year so reckon its worth a try.

there should be a simple short form for PAYE - there always used to be when I claimed it. Check the HMRC website
