I recently got photo-flashed going through a speed camera. I've copped to it: It was me. I was going that little bit over limit.

Given that, what can I expect from the insurance company?

Have you had the NIP yet?
Generally if it's only 3 points (SP30) not too much, although you have to declare them for 5 years which is annoying.
I think once you get more than 3 is when it starts to get expensive.
I recently heard a rumour that some premiums go DOWN because they think you will be more careful, but could just be 4-square court gossip.

I had an SP30 for a while, didn't bother me.

Wife had an SP50 and at one point they wouldn't insure her on my van and other premiums went up for her. SP50 is speeding on a motorway, which I would consider a 'safer' place to speed, if you see what I mean.

Very strange.

Unless you already have points, don't worry.

Was it you? Can it be proved it was you?
Have you even looked at the evidence?

Innocent until proven guilty.

It was 40 in a 30, so well out of insta-ban I think.

It's been years since I've had an SP30 so I expect things to have changed, probably for the worse!

Pepipoo is interesting, presumably something we'll lose when disconnected from the ECHR, but I remember the circumstances clearly so I'm not going to bother to contest it.

its not as bad as you think. I declared my accident from 4 years ago and 9 points and it only went up 70 from 400 to 470

being 18 you'd have thought 3 points would make insurance a nightmare but it hasn't affected my bike policy at all, it has added £2-400 on car insurance depending on the insurer though.

You would be lucky to get a speed awareness course with 10mph over.

Got three points for jumping a red a few years ago. Don't recall it making any life-changing differences to my insurance, more like a slightly irritating small increase in premiums, I've had worse with a bog standard no-points renewal quote.

What constitutes the right to do a speed awareness course then?

(apart from already having done one in the last however how many years)

I think you can only exceed the speed limit by less than a certain amount (or percentage). Something like 8mph over maximum

Had one recently. I'm fucked if I'm giving a day of my life to be told how to tell what the speed is for a given road (I can tell by the circular signs with numbers in, whether or not I'll abide by it is another matter entirely) so take the points.

The three points have had no difference to my insurance at all.

just googled it

you will only be offered it if you haven't attended a Speed Awareness course within the last three years.**the speed you were travelling at the time of the offence must fall within the acceptable speed range (Speed limit + 10% + 9mph).

So op was doing 40mph in a 30 so this falls in to this catagory Thumbs Up

Slowed it down a bit at Cribbs Causeway when the smart motorway gantries begin but prior to that I was flat out so insta
ban and probably jail if I did get my picture taken.... Was too busy trying to stay on to the thing to look around for cameras Embarassed We'll see. Confused

I bought a Z4M a few years back and lost my license for 6 months after building up too many points from being caught speeding.
The points put my premium up very slightly and when I cam back from my ban I actually found an insurance company who insured me for less than my original premium before any of my points.

From my experience claims affect your premium a lot more than points do. Not sure if that's the same for bikes though. Hopefully I'll not have to find out

Speed Awareness course is allegedly becoming a bit of a moot point as Insurers are catching on and now asking you if you've attended one in the last x number of years.

The assumption is they will hit you as hard be it an awareness course or 3 points so if this is the case then surely on balance the points are a cheaper option?

last time I had 6 points from 2 separate SP30's the loading was 25%

when I got an SP50 and a 7 day ban it made no difference, as there were no points

The point of these courses is that you don't have to inform them though, so it is kind of defeating the object if you do tell them......

The NIP gave the threshold for speed awareness course as 41mph, so I just squeaked under that. (Had it not been Big Bulky Bonnie I might have been slower)

Thanks all.

61mph in a 30mph = 28 day ban, 0 points, £200 fine.

That doubled my insurance for 5 years.
