33bhp er5, 18 yr old, quick or not?

i'm getting an er5 shortly, as soon as i sell my 125cc scooter. i was just wondering, anyone who has one, how fast are they? 33bhp restricted i mean. and how much of a step up will this give me from my scooter. Lol even though the 2 stroke runner 125 is classed as the r1 of scoots, i don't think it'll take much beating.

70mph absolute tops, whilst screaming the hell out of it.
0-60 in about 18 seconds lol.

i know that fully de-restricted it gets to 60 in 5 seconds, but what about restricted, also top speed?

Restricted you're probably looking at a realistic 7 seconds or so. Top speed likely to be just over 100mph.

It won't be amazingly quick, but should feel so for you, which is the important thing.

If you're looking at a cheapish one I would say it's an ideal progression from a scooter.

If you want quick get an NC30 but dont expect it be cheep on parts or comfortable. (don't get me wrong, they are bloody great but not comfy or cheep to run imo, i very nearly had one myself but my spine decided against it)

Its all about comprimise... you might want to look at a cbr600, bandit 400/600 (theres even a 250) fazer 400 perhaps? all of which are comfy, reasonable to run and will be good fun when you take the restrictor off after two years Thumbs Up

Go look arround some showrooms and have a sit on some, just think about what you want in a bike and when you need (like if your dayly commute is 60 miles of motorway or 10 miles of country roads, it is going to affect your choice a fair bit!)

The whole point of the 33bhp limit is that relatively inexperienced riders will NOT be riding fast high performance bikes, hopefully saving a few lives.

A restricted ER5 will feel fast, big, and will do the job. Whether you like it or not the law is there to try and protect riders. As time goes by you will feel the need for more power (probably long before the 2 years are done), better to spend some time learning the ropes and save for the dream bike and live to enjoy it.

a 33bhp er5 will manage 110mph flatout i had one as a courtesy bike whilst my ninja was being worked on and i found it to be ok, better than walking.

An ER5 is a good first bike and an excellent commuter.

And if it does 110 restricted, you wouldn't want to go over that often on the unrestricted bike.

I dont see why top speed really matters, you shouldnt be planning to go above 80 anyway.

Its a 500cc 4-stroke motorbike so you know its going to shift sufficiently.

I had a 1998 ER-5 A3 Restricted to 33Bhp when I first passed my test. The top speed I saw out of it was 105MPH Indicated.

Acceleration was good up to about 75-80MPH, after that it it began to creap slowly to the top speed.

I did hate the bike to be honest, the rear brake was a tad over fierce and me being inexperienced didn't make it any better.
Look out for dodgy rectifiers and electrics if you do buy one and check the speedo works too!

Do bare in mind the Suzuki GS500, is a faster, lighter and easier bike to ride than the ER-5, then again the Honda CB500 is also better.

I totally agree. its not that i wanted to go over 100 mph ever, its just that with it being capable of doing these speeds, it should cruise happily at 70 or 80 mph all day long.

i dont belive that the gs is not faster than the er5. i know this becuase it took me forever to decide on which of the two to go for. the er5 is faster, more relaible and comfortable according to what i have read and been told.

In my opinion if he's looking for a 500, to leave the ER-5 alone.

The GPZ500 is a much better bike, so is the CB500.
In my opinion even the GS is better in someways!

The gpz's insurance is too expensive. The cb looks crap and is slower. the gs is slower, doesnt look as good or last as long.

Do you guys still think the er5 is a great bike to get?

i know its no fireblade beater, but it should be great coming off a 125cc scooter!

The ER-5 is slower than the CB or GS, it produces less BHP then the other 2 actually, and only does 110MPH.

The GS500 produces 52BHP and does about 115MPH, and the CB has 58BHP and does about 120MPH.

Oh and the GPZ500 is only group 9 so it shouldn't be that much more.

I personally would never touch an ER-5 again after my first experience.
