British entrepreneur invents, builds and files patent for Iron Man-like flight suit.

There has been attempts, this one isn't that bad so far!

Surely it would be better if he took the ones off his arms and fabricated a small frame to hold and move them. Flying for any length of time would be extremely tiring on the arms.

He gets most of the precision from having them on his arms though, also add a frame and it's not really a rocket suit anymore.

What I mean is a frame that can move but transmits most of the force through some bracket rather than directly into his arms. So he still has the ability to move the engines.

They're saying not.

If that is CGI and wire work, it's nearly as impressive as actually building the real thing.

If it's legit, then it's next level trolling releasing it today.

If...it is real (big if - see what I did there?)

Innovation? Not really.

Potential? Biggest problem I would see is getting enough fuel on board for a flight time measured in minutes, not seconds

You don't need as much as you might think. A quick google suggests that 1kW output would be enough to hover.
Without knowing the specs of the turbines used there's no way of knowing, but a 125 puts out, around 10kW and can return upwards of 100mpg. So even if it's half that (bearing in mind that turbines are generally a lot more efficient than reciprocating engines) then it's 50mpg equivalent so a gallon tank should give enough for at least 20 minutes or so. Although I think I may have skipped noting down a few steps in my mental process here.

My question is cost. How much was the Y2K superbike that turbine powered? And that used a reconditioned engine. Turbines are just great all round in terms of fuel efficiency and power to weight ratio but they're hella expensive.

It looks pretty cool, needs an exo suit to give stability and support the load, oo, let's have some hydraulics too, oh wait Mad Too much massssssssy

Briefly.

"I think it’s far less dangerous than driving a sports bike round country lanes." Shocked

I would suggest fuel would be a minor problem here because there's very little chance of this actually getting very far.

The spool up time on these is far to long to give any kind of controlled flight.

Imagine having a 4-10 second delay when you open the throttle on your bike as the engine spools up another 20,000-50,000 rpm (around 100,000-120,000 is usually full chat)?
Now imagine that whilst trying to fly in 3 dimensions coupled with the radical instability of having the thrust strapped to your arms/legs? Very unforgiving I'd have thought and would take weeks/months to master (as has been demonstrated by this chap spending months trying to achieve stable flight).

On fuel, I've seen single turbines put a dent in a 25 litre drum of fuel in minutes whilst playing at mid-high throttle (and that was just putting out 25-30 lb of thrust) multiply that my 6? Shocked.

Nice idea, I hope their having fun but that they havn't deluded themselves they will have a marketable 'product' apposed to a 'novelty' item because they won't get far until they re-design the conventional gas turbine to overcome these limitations... Good luck with that Rolling Eyes

I know, it's just a really hard-to-fly version of this folly.

But it's the daftness that makes it so glorious. Only a phenomenally fit user is going to be able to control it by directing the jets rather than winding them up and down.

If anyone could be a superhero, it wouldn't be very super, would it?

It most certainly looks like awesome fun and very impressive (considering 50-60lb thrust pushing on each arm could some quite some mischief if it twisted the wrong way).

The real question is... Brave or stupid? Not sure I'd give it a bash given the opportunity... Thinking

Not an April Fools, confirmed.
The inventor was on Talk sport yesterday, talking about this and how development is coming along.
He also said that its pricepoint at the moment, if someone wanted to order it is around $250,000. He was English, talking on a UK radio show, so I have no idea why he priced it in Dollars.

Keeping with the ironman theme, if he actually built an exosuit to house the engines it would take a lot of the strain off his arms.

don't like the frame idea as then it's not really the whole ironman thing and it just becomes a jetpack.

Seems to be doing a reasonable job of cleaning the concrete but a jetwasher would be much cheaper

Cannot see where they are getting that price from
