Trying to tap into a wealth of knowledge here (pun intended)...

In short, at the beginning of June we are having a new bathroom fitted, we have a plumber and decorator/tiler all in place and ready to do it all and are providing the majority of the suite etc ourselves.

My question is around the brassware and taps, we are going for a overflow filler and recessed shower valve to go between the two. My question is which brands are good? Our plumber said Bristan and the bathroom suppliers have said Bristan are no good and look at people like Vado. We are not looking to go cheap - I am of the mindset of buy once and cry once and we only need a shower valve, shower rail and head and a basin mixer so it's only a few items.

Which brands are good?

My god, what a dull thread! I think the mark up for higher end kit might be the reason for the supplier talking them up.

We went Vado. I'm not sure you get what you pay for when it comes to this stuff as it all tends to work, you're paying for how it looks. We paid £69 for a toilet roll holder(!) and we have this mirror: https://www.vado.com/products/accessories-and-mirrors/reflection/mir-magdm-lit/mirror-with-integrated-magnifying-shaving-mirror-and-light-wall-mounted-fitted-with-internal-demister-900mm-wide-x-600mm-high-x-55mm-deep/1026

I mean it's nice but it does the same fundamental job as a £15 mirror from Ikea.

Dont get me wrong, I like nice stuff but every time I splurge on higher end kit I'm left feeling that the cheaper option would have done as good a job.

Boring thread is boring, can't doubt that!

Grohe is another brand we have seen - apparently good.

Problem is you shop for bathrooms only a few times in your life so it's useful to get some information together rather than just spend whatever a salesperson tells you to spend.

I fitted Hans Grohe taps 10 years ago in our bathroom and they're still as good as the day I fitted them. Would definitely recommend.

All sorted now - we went with Vado - full price they are £550 for a concealed shower valve. Just seems like an ungodly amount of money!

Home improvements are so expensive!

I spent £2k on refitting my bathroom, including paying a mate to tile two walls, and all the window surrounds etc.

I used to get 20% discount from Homebase and when I got the toilet and units, there was also a half price offer on. I just picked out nice looking taps from the Homebase range, and they have been really good and caused no issues.

I'd spend more if your actually getting something better for your cash, but bathroom taps are about style and finish, so the brand isn't something people checking out your bathroom will look at really.

I'd just choose nice looking accessories, and spend more on quality wall tiles and flooring, where your extra spend will be better utilised and more noticed too.

I've fitted a Grohe mixer tap in the kitchen. Looks and feels like a quality item without breaking the bank.

Grohe and Hans grohe are actually 2 different companies set up out the back of a feud between father and son. Both good though.

The spend so far is just over £2500 but still need to buy a bath (£300) tiles (£2.55 each), flooring, paint, etc it's going to be looking at a best part of 5k once we are done. But it will be a proper job jobbed.
