You may have heard some claptrap Daily Mail horror stories about new EU speed limiters. Well it's not true.
It's just adaptive cruise control connected with GPS that can be switched off.
More important other bits are emergency braking, lane keep assist and fatigue monitoring by 2021.
Why this news is in bike news I hear you say?
Well:
Automatic emergency braking will be life safer against old ladies T-boning your bike prince Phil style

Having experienced many of the devices listed, I can vouch for most of them being of limited use and more of a distraction that a benefit.
Lane keeping assistance is an utter joke and it just made me deliberately swerve across the road to annoy it. Fatigue detection is redundant. You already know if you're driving tired and have decided to take a chance on it. Something beeping at you isn't going to help when you were already driving with one hand out the window.
Adaptive speed control? About 1 in 10 journeys, my Citroen vans on board computer decides to randomly reset itself to km. Now it's supposed to recognise speed limits? You also just know that "overridable" speed detection will involve navigating through four touchscreen menus every time you start the car. Just like that fucking start-stop shite. That's if you subscribe to the theory that speeding causes accidents in the first place.
I also find the ABS kicks in WAY too early and it also goes into what I referr to as "panic" mode if you get on the brakes fast and starts flashing indicators and beeping all over the place. The traction control is utterly useless too. As far as i can see, it's just a light that flashes on the dash when you lose traction. If ti was controlling traction, why can I keep the wheels spinning into second gear on a wet road? Surely it shoudl prevent that kind of thing.
If they are going to mandate anything on new vehicles, it should be a "mute" button that turns off all the annoying, distracting beeping shite and at the same time makes the flashing, nagging central screen go black so you can get on with actually driving. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |
