What are the rules on the placement of tax disk? I've had to move mine from the left side to the right when re-fitting my hugger. It is still clearly visible is this ok?
Thanks
J

It's supposed to be on the left side of the vehicle on ALL vehicles... but i used to have mine on my keyring to prevent it getting nicked.... As long as you have it displayed... it'll be no problem unless you get a cop on bad day.

I thought it was meant to be on the top left hand side of the bike (eg by the screen)

Hi

Left side of the bike forward of the rider, but generally nobody cares as long as it is displayed.

All the best

I think you should probably move it back over to the left, police man followed my dad home once just to let him know it was on the wrong side, didn't check the car or anything, was just to let him know kinda thing.

Traffic wardens often can't be arsed to look for tax discs on bikes parked in tight spaces, and so they assume there isn't one, so you might end up with a ticket even though your bike is perfectly legal!

Not meaning to hijack your thread Jay, but just a quickie, if I get pulled up and I am not displaying my tax disc, however I have it with me, can they technically fine me/give me points for failing to display? Or is it irrelevant if you've got the tax disc with you?

Technically it has to be displayed to the front left of the bike, but don't think any cops would have a problem as long as you've got the disc, or it shows on their system that you've got tax.

The one problem with the bag over number plate is if they do move the bag to see your plate and then give you a ticket, you can't exactly turn around and tell them that the ticket is not valid as they moved a bag you'd put over your plate as that will lead to you being done by the police for not having a displayed registration plate which I would expect is more serious than a parking ticket.

They'll probably ask you why it isn't displayed on your bike, but I don't think any fines will be on order.

Did this happen to you, or do you know that it IS going to happen?? Put it on as soon as.

If any of you read the relevant thread posted by me regarding tax disks, police dont' seem to care as long as you have TAX on your person or on your bike... The dealers and police seem that it was OK for one to display a "scanned copy" on the left as long as you can explain to them why you done so - risk of theft. I keep my original under my saddle in case police need to see it. Been stopped before but it was no biggie according to them - a grey area but quite a sensible move (although he did warn me that some police forces might do you for forgery - but my reason checked out to be bonafide) I even had some guy look at my disk when i went to the shops... went back and it was in an upside down position Confused - had it been my original, i would have been 15 quid out of pocket Confused Crying or Very sad .

No it's not happened to me as of yet. However, I am not currently displaying a tax disc. My tax ran out end of July, and it was the cheapest tackiest tax disc holder the world has ever seen, so much so I just threw it away. I have another one on order at work, but it's not currently in stock at our suppliers, so I am just carrying my tax disc in my rucksack till they've got it in stock and crack on and send it to me Smile

I suppose you could write "Copy" over it, like they do with bank notes when they write "Specimen". Don't know if that would help, but it may get you off a forgery charge.

The thing is, no matter how nit picking it would be for them to do you for having it in your pocket or having a photocopy in the holder and the real one in your pocket, they quite quite easily do you for it as the laws are that you're meant to display one to the front left of your bike. Would have to be a very very pissed off and bored cop to do you for it though, but they could do if they really wanted to. Havn't ever heard of anyone being done for it or having problems for not having their tax disc on their bike. Would think you're more likely to have problems if you put a photocopy in there rather than just having none at all.

Well my tax disk fell off AGES ago and i have got the disk under my seat incase im stoped. But i've been stop checked loads and they have never asked to see my tax, they just check my L plates and send me on my way. As long as you dont get arsey about them stoping you, you wont have a problem. If you start to get the hump, they suspect you are hiding somthing and then further inspect your vehicle!

Ben...

It's really funny that they check you for L plates and not for tax... and YES, i do have "this is a duplicate copy of original" written beneath the date on the tax disk - on the opposite side, got note saying original kept under saddle). I only bother displaying the original 3 months before it's due to expire, cos it doesn't really matter if it gets nicked or not.

My dad rode without a tax disk for nearly 9 months after his got nicked when his bike was parked outside the office... never got caught... I guess the more serious issue is that if you get caught without any insurance, which is a whole different kettle of fish than not displaying your tax.

My tax disk has allways been at the rear of the bike, it was on the left near the rear wheel when i picked it up, but i managed to remove some of the thred from the hole it was in and the only other option is the same hole on the right hand side.
I'm going to have to remove my hugger again anyway so it can move back to the left.

Some barstool from the local chav college nicked my tax disc - I don't know when it was taken, could have been gone for over a week, but it still left me £7 out of pocket applying for a duplicate.

I got a bit panicky about it, worrying about validity of insurance etc, I even phoned the Police. Turns out they don't really care to be honest, as long as you can produce the purple bit of paper, then all is good.
