PostPosted: 22:20 - 06 Apr 2017    Post subject: Unseizing Brakes Reply with quote

Firstly, I came off my 2001 SV650s in January. It sat in a car park, uncovered up until now. I've just managed to get it back and it appears that the brakes are quite seized though I'm no expert.

I don't really have the money to take this to anybody to get it sorted, so I'm looking for any hints on what's the best way to go about sorting it myself.

In the past I have changed my break pads and brake shoe on both my old CBF125 and GPX250. I did oil and filter changes on both too and spark plugs.

Any help or advice would be great, also any tools that might help as I'll need to putt them on a shopping list due to a lack of them.

Thanks in advance

Hi

The front calipers are twin piston sliding calipers. The pins they slide on can seize, and the pistons can seize. Personally pump the pistons out (carefully as you want them to come out at the same time - at least for each pair on a caliper to come out at the same time). Take the seals out carefully. Clean up thoroughly behind the seals and clean the pistons thoroughly. Take the caliper off the pins it slides on. Clean them up and lube them. Reassemble the calipers (if you are at all unsure about the seals then replace them with new ones). Lube the seals with either brake fluid or red rubber rubber grease.

Rear caliper is probably the standard Suzuki nightmare. The pins that hold the pads seize in place. If you can get that out then pump the pistons out. With these you do have the option of pumping out the inner piston first, and pushing out the outer piston through the banjo bolt hole.

All the best

Katy

if you just need to move the bike and arem't planning on riding it, just belt the callipers side on with a rubber mallet.

you'll have to do it after every application of the front brake....

Gotta love people who post stuff like this.....

Stop dead half way through......

So with you idea OP now has to bleed the brakes.... Rolling Eyes

OP DO NOT pump right out.... Just get them far enough out to be able to get a rag behind and clean all the crud off.
A little smear red rubber grease on them once clean will help Thumbs Up

Good job. OP now has chewed up pads, and torn seals. Where is he sending the bill?

He recieved free advice on an open forum, i gain nothing from giving my recommendation, he must assess the quality of the information for himself and take the best course of action taking into consideration his own skills and capabilities.
Are you telling me roger, that op has damaged his brakes? In which case he should have been more careful or better yet employ the services of a mechanic. I merely offered him a method which has worked for myself, a method which, most probably many bikers and mechanics have themselves made use of.

Are you offering any advice to the op or merely criticism of the completely free, measured, considered advice i offered?

Corrosion has the property of being less structurally sound than the metal it formed from so no problems there.

We've assessed it for him and have unanimously reached the conclusion that you shouldn't be giving mechanical advice. Thumbs Up

Piston seals are made of metal, you say?

Katy's advice doesn't need anything added to it. Your, we can milk for as long as you insist on sperg raging about it.

Who here is "qualified" to give advice? Are you a mechanic? I personally wouldnt take the advice of a man wearing what appears to be a paper hat, a man who seems to speak for everyone.

Are you threatened by me?
