Bought a 2016 Boardman MX Sport with a seized headset, replaced the bearings but it still felt rough, and it has damaged the lower bearings. I'm looking to replace the crown race but how do you know what one to buy? Confused

I'll email Boardman and see if they know, it's an FSA headset but I can't find what one they use.

Can of worms.

There are loads of different ones and some even mix and match top and bottom types and diameters.

Open the following PDF and get your vernier callipers out.
https://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/fsa-headset-guide.pdf

Google shows the 2014 model of your bike used an FSA No. 9.

Hmm halfords do list the headset for the previous model as FSA No.10P 1.1/8" - Semi Integrated, looks like they might still use it.

Take the bearings out and have for text on it giving the dimensions and whatnot.

For example:

Bearings are the ball cage type (no text on them), I got these from Halfords: https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-parts/headsets-stems/halfords-aheadset-ball-cages-and-grease-5-32 but looking at them they're a bit different. They have 22 balls when the original had 20, is that important?

Wow, they really cheaped-out on the newer model then. Rolling Eyes

I'd be tempted to measure up the frame and fit some proper sealed bearings and races.

Anyway, in the case of ball bearings, it's the diameter of the balls and if the cage fits on the race that's important. Personally, I'd fuck the cages right off and go old-school.

Buy a big bag o' loose ball bearings (enough to do them all in one bag, batch tolerances are shit). Grease the race, fill it with balls (stuck to the grease), then remove one. Assemble, carefully. I usually put an old towel down underneath to catch spilled ones. If you're doing the lower ones too, having a bungee or even gaffa tape within reach to hold up the forks once they're inserted leaves both hands free to do the top ones.

Be careful if removing the crown race. Mr. Green

If you go for the loose ball bearings option then using a biro lid to neatly drop each bearing in place makes it nice and easy.

Crown race came off surprisingly easy seeing as the rest of it was an absolute c**t.

Top's what was left of the original bearings Shocked Bottom left the (new) bearing the bike chewed up and the crown race to the right. I think this bike was a halfords special and assembled without any grease, as the steering tube(?) on the fork's pitted.

I have considered getting a new headset.
