Hello,

I wanted to change the parking light on my CBR600F to a red LED.

But I was wondering if it was legal to do?
Thanks Smile

You aren't supposed to show a red light to the front.
Blue doesn't go down well either though not sure that's illegal.

Seems kind of academic if it's a parking light, though. Doesn't really matter which side of the bike you crash in to. Laughing

Why do you want to put a red light on the front of your bike?

Because it would still be on, with the head-lamp, when you are moving.

11.—(1) No vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which is capable of showing a red light to the front.

Lack of enforcement. Doesn't make it legal though.

Cheers guys. It does not have to bed red just something that would stand out more. I saw a few bikes which had it as green/purple and it really catches your eye right away.

But seems like just a silly idea

Yellow, green, blue, all fine. Just not red.

I thought I read once (but it was years ago) that one could only show a white light to the front With the exception (still talking about what i read years ago) of amber front position lights on a bike providing they could be operated via a seperate switch.

There was a fad to put semi-transparent plastic 'protection' over headlights and it was OK to have them coloured so long as not turned on.
Riding with a group once one of us got pulled by police and told to remove blue cover there and then - he couldn't carry it so left it with them to dispose of.

Roger's link says otherwise, the legislation prohibits showing a red light to the front (apart from exceptions) and showing a non-red light to the rear (again apart from exceptions). Nothing about what colour you can show to the front, only what you can't and vice-versa for the back.

Presumably the point is to make sure it's obvious which way a vehicle is pointing - if you can see red you're looking at the back.

I run with yellow headlights on the Enfield and (until the bulb blew) the BMW, and green auxiliary LEDs on the Ninja, and am entirely confident that they are all fully legal.

They can have you, if it's bad enough, for distracting other drivers, or whatever the legal bollocks is. They hit the boy racers and chav's around here for a while with that. I don't think single, static LED's were of any concern, but some were "animated" or flashing, or just hella bright. No-one was charged with anything as far as I know, but they got defect notices instead.
