Hi!

As the title explains, I am having issues with Aprilia. It will not spark whatsoever. Let me begin with saying that I have done a full rebuild during the winter where all bearings etc were replaced, and I stripped the bike down to the frame and rebuilt it.

Now, the weird thing is, ALL electric components are working flawlessly, and so are the mechanical components. Compressions is great, everything moves around and all lights, the horn and the neutral light work fine - however, there is no spark. Before I rebuilt the bike, there were no issues with the bike whatsoever, but now that everything is back together, it just won't spark. I've tried connecting my battery to my Dad's bike but it didn't make a difference, so surely it can't have anything to do with the battery... I also checked all wire connectors and they all seem fine. Does anyone possible know what I am missing here?

Thanks for your time!

Alex

Hi

Presume a Rotax 122 engine.

Check the position of the crankshaft pickup (looking at the flywheel from the side, at about the 10 o'clock position), and the clearance between it and the flywheel.

All the best

Katy

You presume right, it is a Rotax 122 engine.

Thanks for the reply, I will try doing so when I get home for school. I'll let you know how it goes!

Update: I fixed it! It wasn't a problem with the spacing of the crank pickup , but it was in the same area... I had managed to assemble the pickup sensor facing the wrong direction... Mad Anyhow, it's all sorted now. Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Question from someone who's 2-stroke curious, what were the detuned engines like towards the end? MCN make out as if it's the end of the world but I believe it's still in DT territory (derestricted of course).

Cat equipped late RS/SX/RX models were a bit slated in tests, and de-restricted they made about 5-6bhp less than the early bikes. Meeting euro emissions regs, seemed to make them more peaky and make the Carburation very poor too.

Apparently you could with different pipes/carbs/ignition mapping make a last model RS125 as quick as any other with the same engine type.

Think this goes for most two strokes though, such as the late model DT125RE's, change all the above and set them up right and you could make them like an 89 bike to ride.

Engine was pretty much the same (although there are some versions of the 122 engine which don't have the facility for a power valve), but the bits bolted on (exhaust, carb, etc) and different.

Down side of this is that you land up with the large ports necessary for peak power, which still give the rings a hard time.

All the best
