PostPosted: 09:32 - 18 Apr 2017    Post subject: Tennis Elbow After Riding Reply with quote

I seem to have developed Tennis Elbow which is especially painful after riding. I’ve dosed myself up on painkillers and anti-inflammatories but the pain is still there after they wear off. Has anyone else suffered from Tennis Elbow from riding and does anyone know of any cure or at least some way of alleviating it when riding?

Dunno, but to help those who might diagnose it:

Does it happen on any particular bike?
Left arm, right arm or both?
Are you keeping a death-grip on the bars? If it's right, have you tried a "cramp buster" or similar throttle assist?

Happens on all my bikes sadly. Right arm only which made me pay special attention to my throttle grip. Personally I don't think I'm gripping it too tight. I did think of one of them "Throttle Bosses" but am a bit wary of something like that in case you hit it accidently. Never used one so would be interested to hear people's experience of them. I'm willing to try anything as the medication route just seems to be aleviating symptoms rather than curing.

I use them and like them. There is some adjustment (physically and mentally) to find a position where you're not accidentally catching them, but I'm fine with mine now. I run them on the very outside of the grip rather than the inside.

I'm talking about these ones, by the way, other variants are available. No need to get a branded one, they're just a piece of bent plastic.

Is it definitely tennis elbow? Reason I ask is I also have this, and someone I know asked if I was sure it wasn't golf elbow (I play both sports - well badminton).

I didn't even know golf elbow existed until he mentioned it (and it turns out he isn't taking the piss!)! Its on the inside of the elbow rather than the outside - just wondering in case its linked to any of your other hobbies?

Anyway, my tennis elbow isn't cured - apparently only rest will help, but that's a bit shit and boring. One thing that really helped along with painkillers was a tubigrip bandage. The slight support and pressure it gives really helped me, to the point where I had no pain after playing badminton. A couple of times I forgot it and it hurt like hell afterwards. From then on I didn't forget it and was fine afterwards. Worth a try anyway?

What sort of size of bars are we talking? I get similar, but only on very small diameter clipons - larger grips seem not to do this to me.

Might be worth looking at either grips that increase the diameter, or maybe something like : https://www.nippynormans.com/grip-buddies

(Going to give them a shot myself some time)

I had tennis elbow last year from doing dumbell curls. Best way to heal is to rest it. Took a good month for mine to get better.

Then once it has repaired, you can get those stress balls to squeeze, strengthening your grip does help IMO Thumbs Up

The "cataching" is what I'd be worried about as I'd imagine that a sudden push on the throttle wouldn't be good for bike or rider. I'm tempted to give them a go though as the pain next morning after a long ride is pretty bad.

Yep, definitley Tennis Elbow. I'd never heard of Golfer's Elbow either until a few weeks ago. Apparently, becase my pain in on the outside of the elbow, that's Tennis Elbow so my symptoms are indicitive of Tennis Elbow. I did have a tube bandage somewhere so will see if I can dig that out for when I'm riding. Can't do any harm I'd imagine.

My grips are thicker than average on both the VN and the Sportster but my ER-6 has quite slim grips in comparison. Riding any of the bikes leaves me with either immediate pain or pain the next morning.

Physio here.

Internet diagnosis always a bit difficult, but tennis elbow will present as a pain to the lateral (outside) part of the elbow. Will hurt on pushing with your other hand around the outside of the elbow.

Rehab

Eccentric wrist flexion with a light dumbbell
Stretching on the wall - straight arm and then flex wrist and try to push the back of your hand to the wall
Light self massage to the muscle belly of the wrist extensors and the ECRB tendon (Outside of elbow)

Prevention
Don't do too much of whatever it is that inflamed it.

It is likely you are having to turn your wrist too much to accelerate. Try to not put your wrist through the full range whilst it heals.

No evidence for the use of tubigrip or any other support for that matter in speeding up the healing of this.

Yes there is such a thing as golfers elbow - both tennis and golfers elbow just describe the position of stress you get on the joint. You don't have to be playing golf or tennis to get them.

I suffered with this a number of years ago and ended up taking Glucosamine and Chondroitin tablets (extra strength).

Not had the problem since.

Now it could be coincidence but, I had suffered with it for quite a while beforehand.

I have had it on both arms for about a year or more.
Work related and it's just a case of finding what the cause is and trying to change that rather than treating the symptoms.
Second about the Glucosamine tablets, possible placebo but did not do any harm.
Considered using one of those armband things but never did and as said a trip to a physio would be best which I never did.

Used to get pains in neck and wrists on sportsbike. Moved to a more comfortable bike 1050 Tiger. Lot easier but still get numb arse after few days so stand up and exercise more.

Recent ride from alaska to Argentina on 800XC, my bloody knees start to ache along with elbows after few days.

I'm just old and need to develop ways to exercise whilst on bike. Smile

Oh, try Turmeric. Seems to help me
