PostPosted: 13:28 - 19 Apr 2017    Post subject: Paid Work. Any Website Builders Down South? Reply with quote

Hey,

My daughter has asked me about building a website for her maternal grandparents' business. Her mum and I split up 20 years ago so I don't see much of them nowadays and, although they'd be prepared to pay, I haven't dabbled in website construction for over a decade and doing it doesn't really interest me.

It'd be a smallish site, showcasing their carpentry and craft work (really decent stuff, tbh) which can be bespoke ordered and/or bought through the site.

If there's anyone here who'd be interested in building the site and sorting the hosting, etc. for the going rate can you get in touch with me and I'll hook you up.

I'm not sure how 'net savvy they are, and I don't know how difficult doing a consultation remotely would be, so I'd advise someone from down south (Hampshire area) would have an easier ride.

I'd also consider it a favour owed as I don't want this hanging over me!

Cheers.

bnp72, although you'll have to put up with the white bedsheets and Union Jack flags everywhere as part of the package.

TBH, that'd be right up their street. There is a flagpole in their garden and until recently it sported a St George cross. I'm told that a Jolly Roger now flutters on high.

All of the above, can't make a judgement without all the info.

I used one.com and built my own when looking to change jobs a few years ago.

just built a basic site showing photos and videos of various projects I worked on and a CV download tab.

Piece of piss, cost me about £15 a year (and get a whatever@myname.net email address) and the online builder was easy to use.

Do it yourself, easy enough.

The e-commerce complicates matters unless simple Paypal buttons will do. Some of those website builders are ok but they're often expensive for what they're and quite restrictive. I'd be setting a website up using Joomla so they can edit it themselves, buy a domain and you can even use a free host.

If they're a small business and don't want to drop a few thousand at a minimum, then there are some good options out there. But if they do, you can drop me a PM, I'm in Bristol, so not too far.

People seem shocked by this but if you want a custom site built, you need a professional to spend perhaps weeks working on it and all of a sudden, thousands works out as a normal rate per hour.

You can save time and money by creating a detailed design for how you want the site to look and what you want it to do. Even if it's just pointing at another site and saying "Want that one, but woody."

I'm puzzled as to why the physical location of the website builder makes any difference.

I prefer to talk to customers as directly as I can. A remote back-and-forth can take days or weeks to resolve what you could do with an hour of "Like this?" rapid prototyping when you're both looking at the same screen.

It's always cheaper to do it right than to do it twice.

Face to face may be more appropriate when dealing with a couple of retirement age, let's say.

That's my suggestion, rather than their request, though.

Yeah, but I don't want to do it and I'm not sure they're tech-savvy enough to do it themselves. Ex in-laws, reasonably messy break-up 20 years ago. Not my idea of the perfect customers.

If you'd like the gig, it's yours.

From their website:

What payment methods can I offer in the Webshop

When you setup your webshop you can choose the following payment methods:

Credit card (Stripe) - Connect with Stripe to offer secure credit card payments.
PayPal - Create a PayPal user to allow your customers to pay with PayPal or credit card.
Manual payment - Bank transfer, cash on delivery, wire transfer, etc.

None of that's difficult to do, it's if you want proper database stuff it gets complicated and the code monkeys earn their money.

I'd always recommend Wordpress over anything else these days, except maybe if you're a pretty large e-commerce store with many thousands of products, then I'd go with Magento.
