I found it a bit soulless.

Brilliant, but dull.

If that makes any sense! Laughing

Isn't it supposed to be the one IL4 bike that has some character though? I like the sound from what I've heard and seen, but it's got a face that only Mother Alien could live with.

I wonder how dull and boring all the other 1000's are though if the R1 has no soul?

IME it's about the least dull superbike you can buy, certainly when it comes to IL4s. The Aprilia and Ducati might offer a bit more character/thrill/experience, but the R1 is in their ballpark.

I just felt it was too easy, too smooth. Not enough of an animal. It was top of my shopping list last year, but once I'd ridden it, I was a bit 'meh' about it. When I'd finished testing the Aprilia I was pretty much speechless. Even though, technically it isn't as good a superbike as the R1.

I'll have to disagree with you there far from dull, i felt it didn't like doing slow speeds and playing around with a few of the modes sharpened it up a lot, not as torquey low down but once you get it past 8k the thing absolutely flys!.... to the point i was giggling

The new R1 is anything but dull, if you want to know what dull is ride an S1000RR.

Then I can understand why you loved it!! Laughing

That was, without a doubt, my least favourite post test ride machine.

Litre bikes are all about dull - they make it very easy to go very fast.

If you want 'interesting' get a 250SX and a set of SM wheels Smile.

Really? You been riding the same bike?

I have ridden my pals 16 plate R1 (which is pretty much the same) and I've also ridden a pals R1M... both superb bikes and probably the best IL4 you can get for character.

My last 3 bikes have gone:

2014 R1 > 2015 1299 Panigale > 2016 RSV4 RF

You can't get much different between the 3 in terms of superbikes and all brilliant in their own right but only the RSV4 & R1 share similar characteristics, the 1299 was in another league.

I'd own another R1 but the M version but I do kind of like the idea of a new H2 Razz

Also Ducati are making a V4 to replace the Panigales... could also go back to Ducati for that alone Cool

There are some bikes you just feel drawn to.

RSV4 is one.

The other is a big bang with Toce

How does that not have character?

My old R1 with Toce pipes.

Tell you the truth about the Toce pipes though.... they are too loud even with the baffles in. They are borderline obnoxious and take the baffles out and put a decat pipe on there.... stupidly loud.

I managed a year before I thought about changing the pipes and then got rid and got the 1299 before I decided I wasn't keeping it.

For me sound is a minor part of character - and more that I want a variable pitch sound which makes it easy to tell where in the rev-range you are.
I find twins are often pretty plain regardless of revs, meaning you often change up too early or too late.
