Mouse problem on web pages

What is the name for the scroll wheel in between the 2 mouse buttons on a PC mouse? well sometimes on web pages that thing won't move the page up and down. I spin it forward and backwards and nothing. Sometimes pressing F5 helps after the page has reloaded.

If I press it downwards there is a strange cursor on the screen and sometimes that will do nothing either. I can move the page using the arrow keys. I am using Chrome. The mouse works fine apart from this. What is likely to be the cause. Should I use a different browser? or what?

OK thanks. Why won't it scroll pages though? the mouse is barely 6 months old and is optical, rather than replace it I was hoping for a work around.

If its a mechanical issue you could try one of those compressed air spray cans around and in the mechanism, It might be dust / crap issues.

If its software or "cheap chinese copy" issues - you might need a new one.

Have you got the correct drivers for the mouse, or has there been a update for it recently, if it was using a generic driver previously things may have changed.

I took it back to poundland with the receipt and got another. New one works fine now, obviously a faulty mouse. Thanks everyone.

Funny i'm getting this as well, only get it on chrome though.
closing the tab & opening a new one sorts it out.

Chrome is a RAM hog. It eats it alive. My money is on Chrome being the issue.
These days, I'm trying Opera and it's never missed a beat... so far. Whereas Chrome used to hang like buggery, and Firefox developed issues with plug-ins which I couldn't be bothered to diagnose. I only have 8gb of DDR3 RAM though, so that could be a contributing factor.
