I'm an idiot and remotely released the ip on my windows 10 based server, does anyone know if it will auto renew at some point? I'm out of the country and using it to access the router to set up as a vpn server but now I think I've buggered the job until I get back.

my gut feeling says no, it's always been a two step process release then renew, I think you actually get a 169.x address when you release it, which means it won't be looking for another.

Why isn't your "server" on a static? Also guessing no ilo/idrac if you're running win 10

Can you remote reboot the router, assuming that is the device running the dhcp server?

Yeah its not really a server, its just an always on machine. Never needed a static until now. No access to the router, well none that I've set up and/or got the details for. If I had a static I could probably sort it out but I cant think of a way of finding my IP.

This was a half arsed afterthought when in Spain to be honest so its my own fault.

Good call Cansa, definitely worth a shot. If it drops the power/connection on the server interface it may try renew itself

No "remote hands" ?

Worth trying the WAN IP in a browser if you know it. Try it with :80 after the IP too. I presume you had remote access to the server/pc, so it may have a record of the last WAN address.

What router is it? Some have WAN access enabled out of the box.

https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80

http is port 80 you don't need to specify it

I understand that, but am pretty sure I've had one in the past which needed the port adding too. Maybe it was something to do with port forwarding and I'm getting it mixed up?

Either way, that address would work whether it's needed or not, so it's not really an issue is it? [/list]

Yeah, sometimes people change web mgmt port to :8080 or 8000 if there's another web service nat'd through on the ip

my terrible sense of humour....

he said https://domain.com:80 would work whether the 80 is needed or not
https://domain.com:80 is essentially (80)://domain.com:80 or https://domain.com:(http) because you're specifying the same thing twice

it works though so it's not really an issue
it works though so it's not really an issue

although I do think I'm going to specify 80 and 443 in all of my links forever now.

I did spot that a http request was being sent to the http port by specifying the port just in case the target did not understand that the standard port for http requests is port 80.

But i wasnt going to say anything

Calm down ladies. Don't be getting all angsty because of my stupidity.

I suppose I could sort all this out if I had my ip, I don't nor can I think of a way of getting it remotely.

Never mind. I'll be back in the UK a bit in May to sort it. Thanks everyone for trying to help.

https://127.0.0.1
https://127.0.0.1:80
https://localhost
https://localhost:80

all do exactly the same thing.

I hope that you have learnt something new today.

Yes. I've learnt this sub forum has a couple of cockwomble billy big bollocks IT willy wavers, who were so desperate to point score, they not only missed that I said it probably wasn't needed, but the fact that it makes no effing difference anyway.

It would still work. Get over yourselves.

So in a post that is abusive, you are saying your post is redundant.
Thumbs Up

I was just kidding around, but whilst we're being assholes about it, aren't you supposed to do this shit for a living?

I'd be pretty bleak if my IT professional/consultant/provider didn't know how a service port works.

My company of 15 years didn't go bust. Says it all really.

The company that needs help from a motorbike forum about VOIP
The company that has faith in Apple
The company that doesn't understand how ports, IPV4 addys and DNS work.

Does the company have a facebook page?
I'll leave a review innit.
