so, ive got a pretty ancient pc here that i'm slowly upgrading, so far its got a better psu, strix rx470 gpu, and 10gb ddr3 ram. now, i can play most games at low settings, but the cpu is constantly at 100%.

its an ancient g850, dual core 2.9ghz

so normally i'd get a new motherboard with a newer socket, maybe a ryzen 5 1500x + board, but then i'd have to get those plus new ram.

but there seem to be some pretty good processors availible for the 1155 socket, like https://ark.intel.com/products/61275/Intel-Core-i7-2700K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

so, can anyone tell me what im going to be missing if i just buy a better CPU instead of +new MB and new ram?

I did something similar.

I went from a Gen3 i5, to a Gen2 i7.

Whist it made a noticeable difference in playing games (mostly the new Doom game) that was about it. Like you, my slower CPU was running at 100%.

I think I still have the i5 kicking (3GHz/3.2GHz Turbo 3330 quad core) around if you want to give it a punt before shelling out some something?

When did you last rebuild the OS? How about dropping in an SSD and reinstalling from scratch?

?

If he doesnt want that CPU, let me know what you would want for it, as it would do me just perfect. My i3 is becoming a bottleneck and it needs a replacement asap.

Sorta depends what you want really. I'm guessing not top level gaming so then processor memory and HD would get you away.

The biggest boost I ever noticed was going to SSD drives. Never go back I will never!!!!

SSD as main boot and a spinny as secondary storage is pretty optimal.

Older boards are a little more involved in installing them whereas modern boards are simples.

Completely depends on what you want, what you are willing to spend and how much effort you are arsed in expending.

Edit: I should read the OP properly.
