Struggling with a decent mx5 but seem to have a few of the above about

Worth looking at

I know the mg Needs the multi layer gasket as 1.8 k series engine
But if not rotten are they OK

Love shape of mr2 but not really clued up on them as never really looked at them before
Or am I better off waiting

IMO, if you can get past the various issues, the TF is a seriously underrated car.

A good one drives really well, the steering is Kart sharp, they've got quite a nice gear shift and the ergonomics are pretty good.

But aside from the well known engine problems, they feel a bit overbraked (not quite as bad as an early Monte Carlo, but enough to notice) they leak like sieves and they are pigs to work on.

As for the MR2, I wouldn't go near a MK3, it's all show and no substance.

I can't believe you can't find an MX5, there's thousands out there - what exactly are you looking for?

Best to buy a convertible mid-winter Smile A pal offered me his mk2 MX-5 S-VT as he was struggling to shift it last winter (it was cheap too).

One of the guys at Practical Classics mag recently had the situation where he needed to work on his MX5 which would take it off the road for a few weeks, so he was offered an MG TF (I think) with VVT which needed to a little bit of work, but was cheap and very tidy, so he got it and sorted that very quick. A few weeks later the MX5 was sorted, so he had to decide which one to sell, the MX5 or the MG, and he kept the MX5 as he said it was a better drive.
Although he did say the MG was a very good value car.
I hear the MR2 mk3 has 'sod all luggage space' but that's only what I've been told.

Got to pretty much agree with everything Shaft says on this.

I've owned an MGTF, and driven MGF's and MX5's, but never a mk3 MR2. Sick

Go have a word with yourself if you like the styling of the MR2, it's like a deformed frog. The MX5 mk2> is not especially pretty but very well proportioned and very well balanced.

The TF is from the front like a mini Aston Martin, with the Peter Stevens restyle.

None of the cars are a disaster to drive or own or have any flaws so bad they should be avoided at any cost.

Without going into it all, an MX5 is the best car, best drive and most reliable.

The TF is not a bad drive but, compared to an MX5:
1, far too understeery relatively speaking.
2, feels like sitting up in a bus drivers seat in comparison.
3, the gearshift will only feel acceptable if you've never driven an MX5.
4, there's two real TF issues.

Firstly the saying lose a pint of coolant= lose an engine is accurate enough. Any loss of coolant (many possibilities including corrosion of the mild steel long under car pipes, hoses, hose clips and expansion tank cap failure) can really spoil your fun. Keep a K-series cool and it's only a few age related and cost cutting issues that really cause head gasket woes or worse.

Secondly the TF was not as well built or rather not as well protected against corrosion as the earlier softer MGF. You'll see as many MGF's in good condition or better than TF's today. The wheel arch liners can trap moisture and the unprotected rear edge of the front arches gets peppered in stone chips causing early rust. Rear arches need checking too. Its no Ford Puma, but still keep an eye on it.

The MR2 has a couple of serious but fixable mechanical issues, and the 1ZZFE engine isn't as good as Toyota's reputation says, but then they'd argue it's no K-series either.

Buy best car you can on condition and expect summer only cars to have little issues stemming from irregular use or poor storage.

I had a mk3 MR2, was quite impressed with how it handled. Sure, its not super powerful and a bit of a hairdressers car but if you pick one up thats had the Celica 190 popped in there, its a lot more fun, commands more £££ though.

That and the exhausts are prone to crumbling inside and entering the engine, boom.

I'm guessing by the other machines he's listing that would be a budget buster and a half - probably more like double to triple his spend, otherwise I'd agree.

Surely it only needs room for some hair straighteners and a pot of mousse?

Agreed. It has been MY answer for the last 8 years and is in no danger of getting sold yet.

Have you seen the equipment hairdressers carry around now?
Dryers the size of small air compressors, and the lotions+ can be by bucket loads...
I'm glad I'm old and balding!

Hi

I have an MX5 (mk3). The Mk1 is getting rare in nice condition, and if you find one it would be a shame to waste it as a daily driver. Mk2 seems to be very hard to find in non rusty condition. Mk3 might be out of your budget (and the interiors seem to wear out rapidly on the cloth seats).

I did consider an mk3 MR2. But the car needed to be usable every day, and the pretty much complete lack of any luggage space made it useless. Certainly couldn't use it for the 2 of us to go to France for a few days.

MGF / TF was a possible as well, but the price didn't really justify the risk and the soggy handling reputation.

All the best

Katy
